iPads are useful for a lot of things, but what do you do when you want to use one to print something out? It's not like a computer that you can just hook up to a printer, right? Actually, it is pretty darn easy: Apple introduced AirPrint a few years back as a way for users to be able to print from their iOS devices. Even if you don't have AirPrint-compatible printer, then you can use a piece of software for your Mac like Printopia to enable wireless prnting. Here's an explanation of how to make AirPrint work.

About AirPrint

AirPrint is a zero-configuration utility for printing from iOS. As long as you've got a printer on your local wireless network that supports the AirPrint protocol, then you'll be able to print from your iPad, iPhone, or iPod touch without any extra software. If you do not have an AirPrint-compatible printer, then you'll want to purchase and download a piece of software on your Mac such as Printopia, which will allow you to print to non-AirPrint printers. Printopia couldn't be simpler to use: just download it on a Mac that's networked to the printer you want to use, fire it up, and select which printer(s) you want to share. (You can give it a try for free if you'd like; Printopia offers a free trial version.)

Most iOS application include AirPrint functionality. In the next section, we'll show you how to use it with the Notes application in iOS, but you can also print through many other applications including Pages, Microsoft Office, and more.

Printing a Note from iOS

Once you've configured your AirPrint printer, or Printopia, then you can begin printing from your iOS device.

Here's an example of how to print using the Notes application included on all iOS devices:

1. Open the Notes application. Create a new note or open an existing one.
2. When you want to print your note, tap the Share button in the top toolbar (iPad) or bottom toolbar (iPhone).
3. In the Share Sheet that appears, select "Print."
4. In the Printer Options that appears, select the Printer field, and then select your available printer.
5. Optionally, set the number of copies that you'd like to print.
6. Tap the Print button when you want to send the print job to your selected networked printer.
7. That's it! When you tap Print the job will be sent to the printer over AirPrint. Without any additional steps involved, you'll wonder why you haven't been printing from your iOS devices sooner.

You can use the AirPrint feature in many built-in iOS applications like Mail, Safari, Notes, Photos, and more.
