World Backup Day: Ad-hoc backups to the cloud & more giveaways

time-machine-logo_270.jpgHappy World Backup Day! The only safe way forward is to back up; that's why we've joined the cause for data saving with tips, techniques and giveaways all day today.

As Steve mentioned earlier today, there are lots of cloud-based backup services eager to help you protect your data while solving the onsite/offsite conundrum. A backup of uncertain status in a single location isn't much better than no backup at all -- for one thing, it gives you a sense of confidence that your data is protected when it might not be.

Getting your data tucked away with DollyDisk, Backjack, Backblaze, Mozy, Carbonite or CrashPlan may not be the fastest or cheapest approach, but sooner or later it may save your bacon. Compare and contrast plans here. (Lifehacker has a full rundown on how CrashPlan can help you sleep soundly at night, knowing your backups are solid.)

Even if you're not up for a full-on cloud backup solution (whether due to bandwidth or budget constraints), there are still some surprisingly easy ways to back up your key files in the cloud, and do it for cheap or free. All of these approaches require a bit more thinking than the automated tools above, but if you're the sort of person who makes copies of your bank statements or saves your dry cleaning receipts, then you can probably get into these habits too.

World Backup Day: Turn, turn, turn + more giveaways

time-machine-logo_270.jpgHappy World Backup Day! We can't really emphasize this strongly enough: you need good backups, and you need them now. That's why we've joined the cause for data saving with tips, techniques and giveaways all day today.

For Mac users running Leopard or Snow Leopard (10.5 or 10.6), the good news about backup is that you've got a pretty solid tool already installed and ready to roll: Time Machine. We've covered the basics on Time Machine before, but there are a couple of ways to supplement and improve your TM experience -- making your backups safer and simpler.

Ask an IT professional about backups, and you might hear a maxim like "If you haven't verified that you can restore the data, it's not a backup; if you haven't made at least two copies and sent one of them offsite, it's not a backup either." Most Mac owners would do well to follow these guidelines, as it's far too easy for a single backup drive (especially one sitting right next to your computer) to fall victim to trouble and woe.

Audi China: The A8L “Genesis” Campaign

Audi A8L - Genesis Campaign China

"And on the seventh day the lord rested". According to the Book of Genesis in the Bible's Old Testament, having spent six days creating the world the good lord needed to sit down. Now Audi (奥迪) has announced that it is stepping in to do the rest.

What on earth am I talking about? Well, the German car manufacturer has launched a new campaign based around the seven days of "Genesis" (创世纪) to promote its glorious new Audi A8L vehicle.

On Youtube

On Youku

Yes, it's yet another "long wheel-based" model. For those who aren't aware these extra spacious versions of European saloon cars all the rage in China at the moment.

The campaign itself used biblical references to create a countdown to the A8L launch in its print advertising (CLICK THE IMAGES TO ENLARGE):

On the First Day – "Let there be light!"

On the Second Day – "Divide the waters above from the waters below"

On the Third Day – "May the waters below to be gathered together in one place, and dry land to appear"

On the Fourth Day – "Separate light from darkness to mark days, seasons and years."

On the Fifth Day – "Teem (the sea) with living creatures"

On the Sixth Day – "Let man walk the Earth"

On the Seventh Day – 'He saw the Audi A8L, and saw that it was good'

I've not seen this kind of approach in Chinese car advertising before so it's quite refereshing to see. The following posters are also being rolled out as part of the promotion:

Just for fun…

ASUS Eee Pad Transformer Tablet Has 16 Hour Battery

ASUS Eee Pad Transformer. How well can a tablet OS run on a laptop?

Looks like Asus couldn't decide whether it wanted to make a tablet or a netbook, so it made both. The Eee Pad Transformer is a tablet which docks itself to a hinged keyboard and offers a long, long battery life of 16 hours.

It will be very interesting to see if this actually works. The tablet component uses the 1GHz Tegra 2 processor, has 1GB RAM, a Gorilla Glass multitouch screen (10.1 inches), 1.2 and 5MP cameras, gyroscope, compass, GPS and so on. The keyboard is little more than a dock with a trackpad and battery (without the dock, the battery life drops to 9.5 hours).

It seems like a great idea, but I wonder just how well the Android 3.0 Honeycomb OS plays with keyboard and trackpad. Anyone who has teamed the iPad up with an external keyboard knows that it works great if you have some text to type, but anything else is a pain. The OS just isn't designed to be controlled with a keyboard.

Still, if you're going to carry a keyboard with you, the extra battery life is nice.

Prices are still unannounced, as are U.S launch dates, but you can see a full spec sheet in the linked press release, and if you live in Taiwan, you can pick one up today.
