LG G3 Review

As I walked through Times Square on my way to the office one day last week, something odd caught my eye that made me do a double take. A sizable line had formed outside of the AT&T store as it prepared to open. I have seen people line up outside of that store before, of course, but typically only when a fresh batch of recently launched iPhones is waiting on the other side of the doors.

This time, however, people weren't lining up to buy a new iPhone. They were lining up for the just-released LG G3.

And truth be told, this is a phone worth lining up for.

Questionable Claim of 30% Slimmer 'iPad Mini Air' Launching in Late 2014 [feedly]

----
Questionable Claim of 30% Slimmer 'iPad Mini Air' Launching in Late 2014
// MacRumors: Mac News and Rumors - All Stories

According to a new report from Taiwan's Economic Daily News, Apple's third-generation iPad mini will be an "Air"-like model, featuring a design that shaves 30 percent off the thickness of the device. This thinness along with a powerful new A8 processor will be among the main selling points for the next generation iPad mini, claims the Asian sources (via GforGames).

ipad6
Mockups of the next generation iPhone, iPad Mini, and iPad Air from Apple.club.tw

While the sources of the rumor are given only as from the supply chain, the claim of a 30 percent thinner iPad mini seems to be an overly optimistic one. The original iPad mini measured 7.2 mm thick, and the device saw a slight increase to 7.5 mm with the move to a Retina display last year. The larger iPad Air moved in the opposite direction last year, slimming down from 9.4 mm in the fourth-generation iPad to match the Retina iPad mini at 7.5 mm.

A 30 percent reduction in thickness for the iPad mini would put it in the range of 5.25 mm, and how Apple would achieve such a reduction is unclear, especially given the increase in horsepower seen with the move to a Retina display last year. That move made the iPad Air and Retina iPad mini essentially identical with the exception of display size.

Apple is expected to release the updated iPad mini in the third quarter of 2014, likely following the iPhone 6 launch in September. Besides a possible thinner form factor and A8 processor, the next generation iPad mini also is expected to include a more durable Touch ID fingerprint sensor containing tin. Similar to the iPhone, the next generation iPad is expected to support iOS 8's new SDK that allows third-party developers to access the fingerprint scanner for verification purposes.

Besides the iPad Air and iPad mini, Apple is rumored to be expanding its iPad lineup with a larger 12.9-inch iPad. Dubbed the "iPad Pro," the larger model may not be released until 2015, claims DisplaySearch analyst David Hsieh. This prediction echoes a earlier report from KGI Securities Ming-Chi Kuo who also predicted a 2015 launch date for the oversized tablet device.

iOS 8 Beta 4

Apple on Monday released iOS 8 beta 4, just as our sources said would be the case. The new build is Apple's fourth developer preview release of its new iOS 8 software, which will be let loose to the general public sometime in the coming months, likely just before the next-generation iPhone 6 launches. In the meantime, developers can use Apple's iOS 8 betas to update their apps and build new ones that take advantage of all the new APIs Apple has provided. For the rest of us, iOS 8 gives us a look at all the great new things to come.

Unfortunately, not all of those things are actually great.

Apple Releases iOS 8 Beta 4 to Developers
// MacRumors: Mac News and Rumors - All Stories

Apple today released the fourth beta of iOS 8 to developers, two weeks after releasing the third beta update and more than a month and a half since unveiling the new operating system at the Worldwide Developers Conference.

The update is available through Apple's over-the-air updating system on iOS devices and can also be downloaded via the iOS Developer Center.

ios_8_beta_4
iOS 8 introduces a range of new features, including improved integration with OS X through Continuity, a Health app, Family Sharing features, interactive notifications, a new QuickType Keyboard and improvements to several apps like Safari, Mail, and Messages.

iOS 8 beta 4's Monday, July 21 release date was accurately predicted by BGR earlier in July.

Currently, iOS 8 is only available to registered developers, but the operating system is expected to be released to the public this fall after several beta iterations. Based on past history, iOS 8 will likely be launched alongside new iPhones, and possibly the much-rumored iWatch.

iPhone 6 Rumors Battery Capacity

A report last week revealed iPhone 6 battery details, suggesting that Apple's 2014 iPhone models may offer similar or even better battery performance as last year's iPhones, as they will have slightly bigger batteries. The 4.7-inch iPhone 6 was expected to have a battery capacity of 1,800 mAh to 1,900 mAh, while the phablet version of the handset was said to have a 2,500 mAh battery. Now, French publication Nowhereelse has obtained an image of the purported 4.7-inch iPhone 6's battery, which may confirm that the battery has a capacity in line with previous reports.

Apple CEO Tim Cook says everyone should do 80 percent of their work on an iPad, just like him [feedly]

----
Apple CEO Tim Cook says everyone should do 80 percent of their work on an iPad, just like him
// 9 to 5 Mac

12-things-you-never-knew-you-could-do-with-your-ipad

We'd heard back in 2012 that Apple CEO Tim Cook spent 80-90 percent of his time on an iPad, but the WSJ reports today that Cook thinks that's the way it should be for all of us – and he believes the partnership with IBM can help make that vision a reality.

"There's no reason why everyone shouldn't be like that. Imagine enterprise apps being as simple as the consumer apps that we've all gotten used to. That's the way it should be" …

The plan is to collaborate on developing workplace apps that provide a friendly front-end (provided by Apple) to big-data analytics (provided by IBM).

Apple and IBM said the ambition is to reimagine how people work by connecting securely the insights gleaned from big data analytics with an easy-to-use app on smartphones and tablets that consumers are familiar with.

IBM Chief Executive Virginia Rometty said Apple engineers are able "to take the complex and render it simple."

The two companies intend to create more than 100 apps together, with the first of them available in the fall. As an example of the value of packaging sophisticated analytics data into an easy-to-understand front-end, Rometty said that one of the first apps launched would be aimed at airlines.

One of the first apps under the new initiative helps airline pilots determine the appropriate amount of fuel to carry on a flight. This requires not only crunching data but presenting it in an easy-to-understand way on the pilot's tablet computer.

We've already seen a flurry of airlines, including American, United, BBA and Jet Blue using iPads on the flight-deck, making this app a logical next step.

Cook said he could see a day when "everyone in every enterprise" has an iPad. The vision may be exaggerated, and I'm sure app developers would have some views on the practicalities of doing 80 percent of their work on iPads, but it does tend to underline my view that Apple has big expectations of the partnership.

Apple today expanded its two-step verification feature for Apple IDs to 48 additional countries, bringing the total number of countries able to access two-step authentication to 59.

Initially noticed by 9to5Mac new countries receiving the feature include China, France, India, Japan, Korea, South Africa, Thailand, Switzerland, and many more across Asia, South America, and Europe.

twostepverification
First launched in March of 2013, two-step verification is designed to provide Apple users with an extra layer of protection through the use of a trusted device and a security code for their Apple IDs. Two-step verification was initially limited to users in the United States, United Kingdom, Australia, Ireland, and New Zealand, and expanded to several additional countries later in 2013.

Two-step verification may also be applied to iCloud.com in the future, in addition to Apple IDs. Apple's two-step verification support page has a full list of countries that are able to access the feature.

Continuity Keypad adds a dialer to OS X Yosemite for iPhone Handoff calls [feedly]

----
Continuity Keypad adds a dialer to OS X Yosemite for iPhone Handoff calls
// 9 to 5 Mac

Continuity Keypad

Anyone testing iPhone Handoff calling on OS X Yosemite, Apple's latest Mac operating system, have probably noticed one major detail missing: a dialer. Student developers Eytan Schulman and Harrison Weinerman have created a very useful utility called Continuity Keypad that solves that problem.

Essentially what the app does is bridge a gap created by Handoff and FaceTime when making calls on your Mac using your iPhone. It creates a dialer similar to the one found on your iPhone allowing you to easily call numbers using your iPhone from your Mac, and it uses transparency to fit in with the new look of OS X.

The current implementation of Handoff between iPhone and Mac allows you to answer incoming calls from anyone, call out numbers saved in your contacts, or type out a number in a text field and call from the sub menu, but Continuity Keypad makes the experience of initiating a call to someone not in your contacts a much more intuitive experience.

The utility does have a few limitations at this point like pound (#) and star (*) functionality during calls, but these buttons do work when initiating a call. The utility does make calling a second number during a call on Mac much easier, though, and anyone testing iPhone Handoff calling on OS X Yosemite should find it useful.

Handoff iPhone callingThe app's developers plan to continue working on the utility by improving performance and adding additional feature before releasing it alongside OS X Yosemite later this fall, and current Yosemite testers can try out an beta version of the app for free here in the mean time.

In addition to the work above, the video below shows the potential for a dialer using the Today view in Notification Center, which will support widgets with OS X 10.10.
