Report: iPhone 6 mockup give a 'rough idea', Antenna breaks won't be part of final design
// iPhone Hacks

We've already seen plenty of physical mockups of the iPhone 6, which have given us a glimpse of what Apple's next generation iPhone will look like. I think most of us would agree that the antenna breaks or the stripes seen at the bottom and top of the all-aluminum back casing look quite ugly. Continue reading

Why Google and Apple’s battle to lock users into their services will stop at your car’s door [feedly]

----
Why Google and Apple's battle to lock users into their services will stop at your car's door
// Mobile

Google is coming for our cars.

At I/O, Google revealed the car was another gadget on the long list of new devices in which the company planting the Android flag. It's easy to get the impression that car is about to swallowed up in the mobile OS wars, just like the smartphone and tablet, the wearable and TV set-top streaming box.

But Android Auto is a little different from the Android handset, slate or watch. We're not going to see Google take over the dashboard in your vehicle like it would another device. I'm certainly not taking away from the significance of Google moving into the vehicle. The world's most widespread development platform, along with Google's Maps and Search technologies, will start appearing in car dashboards starting this year. The implications of this are huge for the automotive world.

But I think we need to clear up some possible misconceptions about what Android Auto means for the auto industry, the tech sector and the driving consumer.

An Android connected Hyundai at Google I/O (photo: Signe Brewster)

An Android connected Hyundai at Google I/O (photo: Signe Brewster)

We're not going to see Android cars pitted against Apple cars on the open road. Furthermore, the automakers aren't throwing up their hands and ceding the car infotainment market to Google. Car manufacturers are going to keep making their own connected infotainment systems, keep running their own developer programs and keep embedding 3G and 4G connectivity in their vehicles.

There's a lot of room in the dashboard, and we're going to see multiple options for apps and connectivity in the same vehicle. Android Auto is going to share space with Apple's CarPlay and other OS-agnostic interfaces like MirrorLink as well at the automakers own app platforms and telematics services.

"I can't imagine as this plays out in the future that you will have to choose between owning an iPhone to use one type of car or an Android to use another type," said Danny Shapiro, Nvidia's senior director of automotive.

And Shapiro would know. Nvidia is working with many automakers, including Audi, BMW, Tesla and Porsche, to embed its app processers and GPUs into their vehicles. Nvidia is also a founding member of Google's Open Automotive Alliance and has worked on many of the early Android Auto integration projects.

Exhibit A: The Audi A3

The Audi A3 with AT&T 4G connectivity, a mobile hotspot, and now Android Auto (source: Audi)

Audi's implementation of Android Auto is a good example of what we're likely to see in the near future, Shapiro said. Google isn't developing the underlying operating system for Audi's new MMI connected car platform. In fact, the OS is being supplied by BlackBerry's QNX division. On top of that, e.solutions — a venture between Elekrobit and the Volkswagen Group — has developed its own middleware, user interface, APIs and infotainment apps that ride on top of QNX.

Android Auto will be an application framework that runs over MMI. You can almost think of Google as a favored member in Audi's developer platform. It's tapping into MMI's display, command and control, and voice command APIs. The result is the Android interface projected onto the screen and emulated across the Audi's touchpad and various mechanical controls (MMI doesn't use a touchscreen).

The way Audi has implemented Android Auto, you can actually use MMI's turn-by-turn navigation system (which coincidentally draws map data separately from Google Earth) while listening to Google Play Music or composing a text message on your phone using Android Auto's voice commands. In the Audi A3, the first 4G car released in the U.S., the Android Auto apps would run on the phone and connect to the internet over its 3G or 4G connection, while the MMI apps would run inside the dash, connecting to the internet through an embedded radio linked to AT&T's 4G network.

"Audi's approach, I think, is a very elegant one," Shapiro said. Android Auto is one element in a multielement system, he said, and each of those elements can either function independently or work in conjunction. Not every Android Auto partnership, though, will be that sophisticated.

The_Audi_S3_Sportback_Audi_45787

Source: Audi

Audi announced on Thursday that it has also joined Apple's connected car program, and the automaker said CarPlay would show up in 2015 vehicles. Shapiro wouldn't reveal any details about how CarPlay would be implemented in MMI or whether CarPlay and Android would occupy the same Audi dashboards, but he confirmed that Nvidia is working with several car companies on integrating both platforms into the same vehicles.

"There are definitely automakers developing car infotainment systems that will have both Android Auto and CarPlay," Shapiro said.

We're likely going to see scenarios where both CarPlay and Android Auto are running their software in the background, invisible to the driver. But when you plug in your phone with a USB cable or connect to Bluetooth, the car will automatically recognize it and then automatically bring either Apple or Google's software to the forefront, Shapiro said.

And while there's no guarantee that every new car next year will support both Android Auto or CarPlay — there are still some automakers that have joined one development group and not the other — that situation could be soon corrected with a simple software upgrade. There's no hardware component to either platform except for the USB or wireless interface necessary to connect them, Shapiro said.

To only support one system would frankly be stupid. The automakers have no vested interest in picking sides. Why alienate half of your potential customers?

A new era of in-car app innovation

So the connected car isn't going to be new front in the smartphone OS wars, and that's a great thing for consumers. We'll get to choose whether we want to opt for the navigation system, apps and mobile data plans offered by our car manufacturer or if we simply want to make our dashboards extensions of our smartphones.

Android Auto creates a driver optimized version of your Android phone's UI on the dashboard (source: Google)

Android Auto creates a driver optimized version of your Android phone's UI on the dashboard (source: Google)

And if we go the smartphone route, we won't have to match our devices to the make and model of car we drive (I expect we'll see Microsoft launch a similar car connectivity platform soon). We could even choose to use a combination of services. I might want to use Android for Google Maps in my Chevy, but still use OnStar's telematics system for remote start and unlock features and engine diagnostics.

But let's face it: the auto industry has been painfully slow in delivering third-party apps to the vehicle. Programs like Android and Car Play will bring a much a richer app ecosystem to the vehicle because they're building off of Google and Apple's already widely popular developer platforms.

I'm sure Google and Apple will be much more restrictive on what apps make it into the dashboard and how they perform (no Netflix in the front seat)  than they are with their smartphone platforms. But from a developer's point of view that's better than the alternative: joining dozens of different automaker developer programs and creating dozens of different versions or your app with no guarantee that they'll every make their way into a car. No matter how restrictive Google and Apple will be, the auto industry is going to be far more conservative.

Chevy's new MyLink system in a 2015 Impala (photo: Kevin Fitchard)

Though the automakers are opening up to Google and Apple, I suspect these relationships are going to be a growing source of tension between Detroit and Silicon Valley. Presented with a choice between a free Google Maps or Apple Maps and a $20 a month subscription to an automaker's own nav system, I'm going to opt for the former. In my mind Google Maps is already a better turn-by-turn nav app than any vehicle embedded system.

So I give credit to the automakers for inviting Google and Apple onto their turf. In fact, this could mark a new strategic direction for the auto industry in which they use Apple and Google to connect cars they would typically leave unconnected.

Your luxury sedan might come with the automaker's full infotainment and telematics system, but your $15,000 neon-green subcompact might just sport basic integration your Android or iPhone on a small screen. It's the younger set that's often buying cheaper cars, and it's the younger set that accustomed to doing everything – and I mean everything – on their mobile devices.

Two Wheels: Visiobike is an e-bike with a smartphone's brains [w/video]

visiobike connected electric bicycle ebike

Bicycling is a great, environmentally friendly way to get around town, but, let's face it, sometimes pedaling sucks. E-bikes are a wonderful compromise, especially for those uphill climbs, offering a bit of electronic assistance when you need it. Combine that with smart technology, a rear-view camera and gears that shift on their own, and you've got quite the two-wheel package. Build that all onto a sexy carbon fiber frame, and suddenly that four-wheeled hunk of metal sitting in your driveway seems like it's just taking up space.

Visiobike is a new, high-tech, electric bicycle from a company in Croatia. It comes with either a 250-watt electric motor good for 16 miles per hour, or a 500-watt motor capable of 28 miles per hour. It also offers an optional rear-view camera and a continuously variable shifter or an automatic gearbox capable of adjusting itself every 10 milliseconds. Its Panasonic lithium-ion battery charges completely in three hours, and has a range of up to 74 miles. The total package weighs 46 pounds, which is a bit much to lug up and down stairs, but that's a small sacrifice for the effort saved while riding.

The coolest part about the Visiobike, though, is how smart it is. It connects to your iPhone or Android via Bluetooth, turning your smartphone into a virtual dashboard. It can show you what's behind you on your HD rear-view camera, display your speed or help you navigate to where you need to go. It senses if you've been in an accident, and will automatically call for help unless you let the app know you're okay within 60 seconds. It even records the last three minutes of your ride as evidence. Also, Visiobike stores your ride data in the cloud for you to analyze at your convenience.

Visiobike's electronics only work when you enter your personal unlock code, making it less of a target for theft. It features automatic locking hardware on the rear wheel, as well as a motion sensor to let you know if someone messes with your bike while you're away. In the event that it's stolen, you can track Visiobike via GPS.

All this doesn't come cheap, though. Visiobike is currently available on Indiegogo starting at €3,900 (about $5,300 US) for the basic bike with the 250-watt motor. Depending on your gearbox upgrades, motor and whether you choose the Visiocam, you could spend up to €4,950 (about $6,730) for the top-spec bike. For €20,000 (about $27,200) you can get two full-kit Visiobikes, plus a seven-day seaside vacation for two to Croatia to tour the factory with Visiobike CEO Marko Matenda. The struggling Indiegogo campaign ends on July 7.

For more information, see the video below, check Visiobike's Indiegogo campaign, or read a hands-on review of the e-bike at Mashable.

// Engadget

Samsung's Gear Live and LG's G Watch have already been manhandled today at Google I/O 2014, and now it's time to do the same to the third inaugural Android Wear device, the Moto 360. We've already heard much about the watch's unique circular design and have gotten some sneak peeks at the various watch faces that are coming to take advantage of it. Today, however, I finally got my mitts on one, and I can assure you it's as well put together in person as the press shots have shown previously.%Gallery-slideshow203822%

David Pascual's winning Moto 360 watchface design

Motorola has been running a watch face design contest to spark interest in developing for its upcoming Moto 360 wristwear, and it looks like the company's efforts have hit the jackpot. The winning design from David Pascual is a clever blend between a traditional timekeeper and the at-a-glance alerts you'd expect from Android Wear. On top of basic status info, the watch face also has customizable notification widgets; you'll know right away if you have new Gmail or a low battery. Pascual's effort is just eye candy right now, but that may change soon. Winning the competition could get his design featured on the Moto 360, so you may have a chance to check it out first-hand before long.

The best Moto X feature is now available for all Android phones [feedly]

----
The best Moto X feature is now available for all Android phones
// Mobile

One of my favorite features on the Moto X is "touchless control": even if the screen is locked, or you are in an app, you can say "OK Google" and wake the phone up for a search. Now, thanks to an update to the Google Search app, any Android phone can now trigger a voice search with Google's hotword.

The feature, which was spotted by Droid Life, unfortunately doesn't work when the screen is off. The Moto X has that ability, but it also has unique low-power hardware specifically for the feature.

Voice search on any screen is opt-in for now. You'll find the option to turn on hotword detection in the Google Now app: scroll to the very bottom, and tap the Menu button. Options are in the voice settings menu. You'll also find an option to opt out of Voice History, a new feature which presumably tracks things you've said previously in order to get better at recognizing your voice.

Moto 360 Walkthrough Video

Most smartwatches that we've seen haven't exactly blown us away so far, but the hardware design team at Motorola really deserves a lot of credit for the Moto 360, an Android Wear-based smartwatch that looks absolutely terrific. Motorola has now posted a new video that gives us a nice up-close look at the Moto 360 and walks us through some of its basic functions, including how to turn the device on, how to bring up and respond to notification cards and how to use voice commands to ask Google questions. We still don't know exactly when the Moto 360 is coming out and Motorola is only saying that it will release "later this summer." However, it's definitely the most anticipated smartwatch release outside of Apple's still-to-be-revealed iWatch that we expect to see this fall. The full video follows below.

The first third-party Android Wear keyboard curves along the Moto 360′s round face [feedly]

The first third-party Android Wear keyboard curves along the Moto 360′s round face
// Mobile

Android Wear is supposedly going to eschew traditional keyboard input for voice commands, due to the small screens on smartwatches. But we'll still need to poke and peck in order to input passwords, and Miniuum wants to be the keyboard you use on your wrist. The company posted on its blog on Tuesday that it is developing a keyboard for the Moto 360, which is expected to be one of three Android Wear devices announced at Google I/O on Wednesday .

MOTO360

Unlike LG's G Watch and the still-unnamed Samsung smartwatch, the other two devices expecthe Moto 360 will have a round face, which may pose problems for keyboard designers who are used to rectangular screens. While the post doesn't detail exactly how the keyboard will work, the illustrated GIF shows Minuum's trademark ribbon keyboard curving along the bottom edge of the watch face.

Minuum is no stranger to putting its keyboard on unusual devices: The keyboard is available for Samsung's Tizen-based Galaxy Gear smartwatches and Google Glass, and the company will release a keyboard for the iPhone when iOS 8 is released this fall. Plus, Minuum has clearly thought a good deal about how to implement a touch keyboard on a small screen. The company warns that due to limitations built into Android Wear, its keyboard might not work at launch, but full input choice should eventually be built in.

KGI: 4.7″ iPhone’s camera may not support optical image stabilization, 5.5″ likely will [feedly]

----
KGI: 4.7″ iPhone's camera may not support optical image stabilization, 5.5″ likely will
// 9 to 5 Mac

iPhoneSchematicsScale

A new research note from KGI indicates that the 4.7-inch model of the iPhone 6 won't support optical image stabilization due to constraints in the production of VCM suppliers. The larger 5.5-inch version is expected to support the feature, while the smaller device will employ a cheaper motor that's similar to the one found in the iPhone 5s.

Rather, we predict it will use a middle-mount type of open-loop VCM updated from the one used in the existing iPhone 5S. The 5.5" iPhone 6 is more likely to be equipped with OIS VCM due to lower estimated shipments and the need for more product features to differentiate itself from the 4.7" iPhone 6.

The difference will reportedly be one of the factors that sets the two devices apart, lending further credence to the idea that these will not simply be two internally-identical devices with different display sizes as is currently the case with the iPad its "mini" counterpart.

That's not to say that the 4.7-inch phone won't see improvements to image quality. The new motors are expected to allow for improved focus time and use power more efficiently than the design used in the iPhone 5s. Even with this concession, KGI still expects the iPhone 6′s picture quality to lead the market:

Compared with conventional open-loop VCM, closed-loop VCM keeps records of focus points, enabling it to produce better quality pictures, focus faster and save power. Nonetheless, there are many factors that affect picture quality, and VCM specification is just one of them. Therefore, we believe overall picture quality of the 4.7" iPhone 6 will lead its peers'.

Both models of the iPhone 6 are expected to enter production next month, as recent hiring frenzies at manufacturing partners seem to confirm, and will be publicly unveiled this fall.

Overnight Recap: iWork for iCloud Update, Acronis True Image for Mac, FireChat
// MacLife

iWork for iCloud

Google's I/O developer conference kicks off today in San Francisco, and perhaps as a preview of things to come, The Verge reported yesterday that freemium apps on Google Play now account for 98 percent of worldwide revenue for the Android platform. Curiously, Japan is billed as "the world's biggest spender" on in-app purchases thanks to "addictive mobile games," but here's hoping this trend doesn't absorb the iOS App Store as well. Here's a handful of other tidbits you might have missed on Tuesday...

iWork for iCloud Updated with Last Used Document Settings

The Loop reported Tuesday that Apple quietly updated iWork for iCloud, allowing the web-based versions of Pages, Numbers and Keynote to remember the last used document settings, including zoom level, show/hide guides or format panels and much more. The web apps also now suggest your most recent screen name when opening shared documents, adds the ability to right-click to mask images and now includes tips on using keyboard shortcuts for cut, copy and paste when right-clicking objects.

Acronis Debuts Personal Backup Solution for Mac Users

Data protection leader Acronis announced Tuesday the availability of Acronis True Image for Mac, which the software maker touts as "the only full system image backup solution offering dual protection" for Apple desktops and laptops. Previously available only for Windows, Acronis True Image for Mac backs up the entire system, applications, user data and settings both locally and online, and is also capable of backing up and restoring a Parallels Desktop virtual machine in its active state, complete with all Windows applications, documents and settings. Acronis True Image for Mac is now available for $49.99 for a single computer, or a three-Mac license for $79.99; Acronis Cloud storage starts at $2.99 per month for 50GB.

FireChat Update Enables Chat Between iOS, Android Devices

Open Garden released FireChat for iOS 2.5.1 this week, an update the company says should have been called version 3.0 for one new feature alone: The ability to chat off the grid between iOS and Android devices. Previous versions were unable to hop the platform pond and communicate with Android smartphones or tablets, an oversight that's now been rectified. The app also now allows users to create "firechats" and invite friends for "live and anonymous discussions" with just a few clicks, in addition to joining chats already in progress all over the world.

Apple's New Retail VP Now Blogging on LinkedIn

Now here's something we thought we'd never see from an Apple executive: A blog post on LinkedIn. Senior Vice President of Apple Retail Angela Ahrendts did just that on Monday with a post entitled "Starting Anew," and although she never specifically mentioned Apple by name, she openly discusses some of the challenges in making a "life-altering decision to start anew." The post seems to fall in line with what many are calling "the new, more open Apple" with CEO Tim Cook at the helm, with Cook and marketing boss Phil Schiller both actively posting on Twitter these days.

Pebble Partners with Misfit for Fitness Tracker, iOS App Incoming

One of the better smartwatch contenders just got a little more awesome Tuesday as Pebble announced a partnership with Misfit for a new watchapp that counts steps and tracks activity using nothing more than the device already strapped to their wrist. iPhone 6 Said to Launch on Friday, September 19 in 32 GB and 64 GB Variants
// MacRumors: Mac News and Rumors - All Stories

Apple will look to launch the 4.7-inch iPhone 6 on Friday, September 19, according to a new report from Chinese web portal Tencent (Google Translate, via GforGames) citing inside sources. The news comes after German carrier Deutsche Telekom was reported to be informing customers of a similar release date for the device.

iphone61
The report also notes that Apple will launch 32GB and 64GB capacities of the phone for 5,288 yuan ($846) and 6,288 yuan ($1008), indicating that Apple may launch the iPhone 6 without a 16GB model. Notably, 5,288 yuan is the current price for the 16GB iPhone 5s in China, while the 32GB iPhone 5s is listed at 6,088 yuan.

A September launch would be consistent with the past two iPhone launches, as Apple also typically launches new products on a Friday. A report from Bloomberg earlier this week also claimed that Apple may launch the larger 5.5-inch version of the iPhone 6 and the 4.7-inch version simultaneously, with previous reports indicating that issues with battery and display technology would hold up the larger device's launch.

In addition to a larger display, the iPhone 6 is expected to feature a thinner design, a faster A8 processor, and more. The iPhone 6 is also expected to feature an improved camera, with the larger 5.5-inch version exclusively utilizing optical image stabilization and the smaller device featuring an advanced lens module.

Morgan Stanley: Tesla is world's most important automaker [feedly]

Morgan Stanley: Tesla is world's most important automaker

Tesla Model S

What makes a company important? Clothing companies are important because they help cover those of us not willing or able to sew up a storm. Housing companies shelter us. And who could live without whoever it is that makes pop rocks?*

But those are basic needs kinds of things. When we start to discuss things like excitement and innovation, "important" is a more subjective idea. Nonetheless, if you're going to claim that anyone other than Tesla is the most important automaker in the world, you're going to have to argue with Morgan Stanley Research analyst Adam Jonas.

Jonas called the California automaker the world's most important automaker in a new report to investors and he didn't mince words: "Not even two years after the delivery of the first Model S, Tesla Motors has transformed from fledgling start-up to arguably the most important car company in the world. We are not joking. ... Tesla is also emerging as an emblematic force in America's effort to foster high tech manufacturing job growth." His main reasons are as follows:
  • Parts suppliers now thing positively about Tesla and are thinking of building dedicated production lines just to supply Tesla with parts for its electric vehicles. Other automakers are also paying close attention to Tesla. This is a sign that the company has finally become a serious competitor.
  • Tesla could directly employ 20,000 people in seven years and create 100,000 related jobs at other companies. However many jobs are created, Tesla will have a positive effect on the US GDP.
  • The Tesla Model S is the "most American made car on the road, pushing 90 percent US content," which to us might make Tesla the most important car company in America, but Jonas sees a larger impact, apparently.
According to Market Watch, Jonas also sees a big potential in Tesla upcoming battery plant: "The success of the Gigafactory holds the key for the development of an entirely new industry. If Tesla can achieve battery cost per kWH below $150 and defend the IP, there is significant potential for revenue streams not captured in our $320 price target."

Jonas knows there are risks and downsides, which you can read more about at the Los Angeles Times.

*Just trying to think of the least essential product as a joke here.

X-T1/X-Pro1 shutter lag too long
// Fuji X Series Camera Forum

Looking at lightning shots using a lightning trigger.
The fuji X cameras, Xt and XPro are both much slower than my Canon 1DsMkIII body.

Makes tripping the shutter automatically when the IR signature of a lightning flash is seen by the sensor too slow to catch the flash much of the time.

Fuji, make a much shorter release when the shutter button is pushed!

I really want to like the Fuji gear but in use find myself grabbing the Canon most of the time. Light weight is nice but missed focus and missed images because the bodies don't perform at a high level has me frustrated.

For night shots, no problem. Leave the shutter open 15-30 seconds at a time.

Fujifilm also reiterated its plans to increase the number of cameras that can print to the instax Share Smartphone Printer.

According to Fujifilm the firmware will be available from 'Late June 2014'.

Press release:

Fujifilm launches new firmware for three X-Series cameras that makes on-the-spot instax printing possible with the instax SHARE Smartphone Printer SP-1

FUJIFILM Corporation (President: Shigehiro Nakajima) will launch a new firmware for digital cameras in late June that makes it possible to send images via WiFi to an instax SHARE Smartphone Printer SP-1 for instax instant film prints. The firmware is designed for three X-Series cameras: the FUJIFILM XQ1 (a premium compact camera), the FUJIFILM X-M1 and the FUJIFILM X-A1 (APS-C sized sensor mirrorless cameras).

Ever since its launch in February 2014, users have loved making fun and unique prints, and especially enjoyed a diverse lineup of templates and image editing functions. Many people wanted to send their digital camera photos directly to an instax printer for instant printing, and now Fujifilm is proud to offer this feature for photo enthusiasts that use an XQ1, X-M1 or X-A1 digital camera.

『图集』20张彩色修复经典黑白照片
// nPhoto新摄影在线杂志

Adobe Lightroom 5.5 is Available for Download
// Canon Rumors

adobelogo

Lightroom 5.5 is now available as a final release on Adobe.com and through the update mechanism in Lightroom 5.  The goal of this release is to provide support for Lightroom mobile, additional camera raw support, lens profile support and address bugs that were introduced in previous releases of Lightroom.

Release Notes

New Camera Support in Lightroom 5.5

  • Canon PowerShot G1 X Mark II

New Lens Profile Support in Lightroom 5.5

Mount Name
Canon   Sigma 50m F1.4 DG HSM A014
Canon   Sigma 18-200mm F3.5-6.3 DC MACRO OS HSM C014
Canon   Tamron 16-300mm F3.5-6.3 Dill VC PZD MACRO B0163

Bugs Corrected in Lightroom5.5

  • Improved responsiveness in Develop module while Lightroom mobile sync is occurring.
  • Custom Develop module default settings were not syncing correctly to Lightroom mobile.
  • Initial rendition in Develop would sometimes appear posterized.
  • Undo function failed and applied a preset instead.
  • Scaling looked inaccurate when scaling to 200% in Windows.
  • Manual slideshows sometimes did not advance to the next slide as expected.
  • Aspect ratio changed when modifying the crop rectangle and when rotating the crop
  • Image flips between portrait and landscape after switching orientation while shooting tethered with Leica S cameras.
  • Fixed issue with Fujifilm X-T1 raw images appearing too bright at high ISO settings when using Dynamic Range 200% and 400%. Unfortunately, this fix may affect the appearance of existing images captured with this combination of settings. It is recommended that you (1) purge the Camera Raw cache via the Preferences dialog, and (2) review images shot at ISO settings higher than 1600 for unexpected brightness changes.
  • Fixed image quality issue (noisy result) when applying spot healing to floating-point (HDR) images.

New Creative Cloud Technology Connects Latest Photography Tools; New Photoshop Mix Debuts for iPad

SAN JOSE, Calif. — June 18, 2014 — Adobe (Nasdaq:ADBE) today announced the availability of the new Adobe Creative Cloud Photography plan. Designed for anyone interested in photography, the new plan brings together — for USD$9.99 per month — Photoshop CC and Lightroom 5, two tools that have fundamentally impacted how photographs and imagery shape our visual culture, as well as Lightroom's breakthrough mobile apps on iPad and now iPhone. Also introduced today is the all-new Photoshop Mix, a new iPad app that provides access to powerful Photoshop features normally confined to the desktop, enabling compositing and transformative edits while on the go. Built using the new Adobe Creative SDK (see separate release), Photoshop Mix delivers new levels of Adobe imaging precision and magic to mobile users.

"With our Lightroom products alone managing over 100 billion images, we know there's a huge appetite from photography enthusiasts to have powerful, world-class software available on their mobile devices as well as their computers," said Winston Hendrickson, vice president, digital imaging, Adobe. "With Photoshop, Lightroom and new mobile photo apps, we've created the most complete photography solution on the planet, ensuring that anyone interested in photography can be creative with their images, no matter where they are."

Join Creative Cloud Photography Plan $9.99mth

Create and Manage Beautiful Images in Photoshop CC and Lightroom 5
Photoshop CC, part of the Creative Cloud Photography Plan, was updated, with stunning new features — as part of a milestone release of Adobe Creative Cloud. Features for photographers, include:

  • Perspective Warp – The recently introduced capability for fluidly adjusting the perspective of a specific part of your image without affecting the surrounding area.
  • Blur Gallery motion effects – Two new additions, Path Blur and Spin Blur create a sense of motion, even if not originally captured with a camera, enabling photographers to tell their story or express just the right feeling in an image. There's also faster performance when creating blur effects with the Mercury Graphics Engine delivering a performance boost with OpenCL.
  • Focus Mask – Lets Photoshop CC create the first step of a mask by automatically selecting the in-focus areas of an image. The Focus Mask feature works great with headshots and other images that have shallow depth of field.
  • Content-Aware color adaptation improvements – Previously when using Content-Aware features, if a selected area contained smooth gradients, it didn't necessarily appear in the final image. Now retouched images using Content-Aware Fill, Move, and Patch gets more seamless and realistic. Additionally, new technology blends areas containing gradients, like skies, to give exceptional results.
  • Improved stylus support and experimental features for Windows 8.1 – Enjoy smoother brush strokes and a simple out-of-the-box experience with expanded stylus support for Windows 8.1. Turn on experimental features for touch and gesture controls and bigger touch targets on devices like Surface Pro 3.

The Creative Cloud Photography plan includes Lightroom 5 desktop software, a staple for all photographers, making digital photography easier, faster, and more amazing. Photographers can experiment without limits in a nondestructive editing environment and perfect shots with advanced controls for tone, contrast, color, and more. Efficient organizing tools help sort thousands of photos and make it simple to share them almost anywhere.

Mobile Solutions Takes Serious Photography Work Anywhere
Following its April 2014 release on iPad, Lightroom mobile is now available for iPhone. Lightroom mobile for iPhone and iPad provide the most efficient way to manage and edit images across desktops, mobile devices and the Web. The apps can automatically import images from the iPhone camera roll and sync back to a Lightroom catalog on the desktop. Lightroom mobile provides photography essentials, including non-destructive processing of files using Smart Preview technologies to enable professional class photo editing from the confines of the desktop. Quickly apply star ratings, flag or reject images and edit them on iPhone and iPad. Edits and metadata changes automatically sync back to the Lightroom catalog on the desktop and are also viewable from any Web browser at lightroom.adobe.com. Lightroom mobile photo collections are also accessible for users of Adobe Voice, the recently introduced free animated video storytelling app.

Photoshop Mix, provides a connected mobile workflow to Creative Cloud, aimed at anyone who wants access to powerful editing tools on their mobile device. Open Adobe Photoshop documents, individual layers from PSDs, and images from Lightroom mobile. Easily apply looks, create advanced selections and masks, and access advanced Photoshop features like Upright, Content-Aware Fill, and Camera Shake Reduction to take creativity on the go. Then export your layered and masked composition to Photoshop CC for further refinement on the desktop. Share work, or even save it to a Photoshop document for a mobile workflow that works seamlessly with Photoshop CC.

Technology Optimized for Mobile Photography
The Creative Cloud Photography plan's desktop and mobile apps are connected by a powerful technology designed to enable users to edit and sync photos non-destructively from anywhere. By combining the same non-destructive editing pipeline found in Lightroom and Adobe Camera Raw, with Adobe's renowned Smart Preview technologies, the amount of information being moved between apps is minimized, without compromising the end result. This gives users confidence that edits will be saved while being able to access their images with unprecedented speed, no matter what device.

While rumors last week indicated that Apple would be launching minor updates to its iMac line, Apple today unveiled a new lower-cost iMac at $1,099.

The new entry-level 21.5-inch iMac comes with a 1.4GHZ dual-core Intel i5 processor, a 500GB hard drive, 8GB of memory, and an Intel HD 500 Graphics chip for $1,099. All of Apple's other 21.5-inch and 27-inch iMacs are still available as well.

Apple is also rumored to be working on Retina Display-equipped iMacs, as recent evidence in the OS X Yosemite developer preview suggested such models were in the works. While there is no specific release date for a Retina iMac, Apple could launch the new desktop computer later this year.

Apple's new entry-level iMac is available today through Apple's various retail locations and online store, and shows an availability of "within 24 hours."
