With a tweet today, Product (RED) revealed that Apple has raised even more money to fund the ongoing battle against AIDS, bringing the iPad maker's total contributions up to $70 million. That's a $5 million improvement on the $65 million U2 frontman Bono announced in September of last year.

Reportedly, every last cent of that money went to efforts to quell the AIDS epidemic in Africa. It marks an important milestone for the Cupertino company, which first started bringing in money for the program in 2006 with the release of a special red iPad nano.

Much of the rest of this money comes from similar (RED) products. Along with the red iPad nano, Apple has released less expensive complementary items such as (RED) iPhone 5s cases and cover for iPads. In each case, Apple donates a portion of the sales to (RED).

The program received a big boost last year when Apple's Jony Ive and designer Marc Newton designed a red Mac Pro and golden EarPods, which brought in around $13 million for (RED) alone when auctioned through Sotheby's.

Apple's not the only contributor to (RED); other recognizable brands such as Starbucks have raised significant amount of money for the foundation as well. But as Bono said back in September, "Apple is certainly leading the crew."
