National Geographic Photographer Praises iPhone 5s' Camera

Just how good is the camera for the iPhone 5s? According to veteran National Geographic photographer Jim Richardson, it's good enough that he ditched his beloved DSLR in favor of Apple's latest flagship smartphone on a recent trip to Scotland. As AppleInsider reports, he affirms that it's a "very capable camera."

Apparently he was quite prolific with the device. Richardson amassed over 4,000 photos on his Scotland trip, and he posted some of the best ones on Proof, National Geographic's photography blog. Phil Schiller, Apple's head of marketing, noticed the images, and called the images examples of "iPhoneography" in a message on Twitter.

That's not to say that Richardson didn't need some time to adjust to the device, particularly since its "mere" 8-megapixels pales in comparison to the resolutions achievable on high-end DSLRs these days. In time, he focused on "taking the pictures the camera can do well."

Still, his praise was effusive, and he particularly had good words to say for the iPhone 5s's HDR feature and its color and exposure qualities. Most of all, he loved the panorama feature. "What surprised me most was that the pictures did not look like compromises," Richardson said. "They didn't look like I was having to settle for second best because it was a mobile phone."

You might recall that this isn't the first time a major name outside of Apple has gushed over the quality of the iPhone 5s's camera. Before this, we heard it from Burberry, who took advantage of the device's capabilities to film its spring/summer 2014 fashion show last month. In a smartphone marketplace that's increasingly crowded with tantalizing features from other manufacturers, Apple seems to be using the camera as a means of standing out from the pack.
