Leaked Photos Suggest Next iPad Mini May Come with Fingerprint Sensor, in Gold

Now that the gold iPhone's out and (apparently) holding millions in awe, Apple's may be going for the gold with its other products as well. Judging by photos posted on Chinese site Zol.com.cn (via MacRumors), Apple may have a gold iPad mini in the works, complete with a fingerprint sensor similar to the one we see on the iPhone 5s.

If there's a problem, it's that the photos look a little too staged for their own good. One of the photos shows the device from the back with the gold shell in its full glory, although the full detail of the corner is married by a Gaussian blur. Not the best idea when the whole point of the photo is to show a leaked device.

The front side, too, only shows the lower half of the device, although it's obviously meant to emphasize the fingerprint detector and the current generation charger plug. If they're not real, these could simply be good renderings of what a gold iPad mini could look like. As MacRumors notes, further suspicions are raised by the fact that the device looks ready for the market, whereas previous (and recent) leaks have included mere components.

But maybe not. Apple's next media event could come as early as October 20, in which case we'll get to see if Apple does, in fact, extend the golden touch to its larger devices. Based on a report from IHS iSuppli, however, limited supplies mean that we may not see the new iPad mini at all until after the release of the larger iPad.

That may be true, but if these photos have any basis in truth at all, there's a tiny chance that the iPad 5 could come in gold as well.
