Winston Wants to Be Your Siri for News, Now Available from App Store

WinstonCan't be bothered to read the news on your iPhone each day? Maybe you need Winston, a new free app that narrates the news from your social networks so you don't have to.

Following a sneak peek last August, Winston Network has released Winston 2.0 to the App Store this week. The free iPhone app is essentially a cousin to Apple's built-in Siri, but specifically for news and social networking rather than search.

"Winston is your speech-enabled personal assistant who lives on your social networks," the app description reads. "He tells you the news from your social streams and favorite news sites as a narrated, audiovisual newscast that you can enjoy on your iPhone.

"Create a personalized news briefing from your favorite news and social sources," the description adds. "Winston lets you lean back and enjoy the most recent updates from your digital world."

Since last summer's beta sneak peek, the company has juiced up Winston with new channels including a personalized Twitter channel and the ability to play newscasts with a new elegant design that looks great AirPlayed to an Apple TV.

The developers also claim Winston has "grown wiser over the past several months," with an expanded vocabulary that promises to surprise users.

Winston 2.0 is available free from the App Store and requires iOS 5.1 or later; while the app will work on the iPad, it's not a universal build, but it is optimized for the iPhone 5.
