"I'm On My Way": Futuristic Dick Tracy Watch May Come from Apple
Although smartphones and tablets have mostly made them unnecessary, futuristic wristwatches continue to be an obsession for many users who continue to wait for a Dick Tracy-style future to arrive.
The New York Times reported Sunday that those cool, futuristic watches from pop culture may still be heading to our wrists one day -- and they may be coming straight from the Cupertino, California headquarters of Apple Inc.
According to "people familiar with the company's explorations," Apple is indeed "experimenting with wristwatch-like devices made of curved glass," the kind made popular by Dick Tracy, James Bond and even Inspector Gadget.
"Such a watch would operate on Apple's iOS platform, two people said, and stand apart from competitors based on the company's understanding of how such glass can curve around the human body," the report detailed.
While such technology opens the mind to all sorts of possibilities, the report cautions that we may not see such an "iWatch" this year or even next.
"Over the long term wearable computing is inevitable for Apple; devices are diversifying and the human body is a rich canvas for the computer," Forrester analyst Sarah Rotman Epps told The Times. "But I'm not sure how close we are to a new piece of Apple hardware that is worn on the body."
For now, watch fans may have to be content with adapting their iPod nanos -- a pastime that's become popular enough for many accessory makers to release kits for just such a purpose.
