Apple Releases iWork Updates for OS X, iOS
Hard to believe that Apple is still offering updates for its iWork '09 software without releasing a 2012 (or is that 2013?) edition, but another wave of updates hit on Tuesday for both OS X and iOS versions. Pages 1.7 for iOS leads the pack improved compatibility with Microsoft Word documents, including the ability to track changes and lock or unlock objects, while Numbers 1.7 for iOS does the same for Microsoft Excel, with the ability to hide and unhide rows or columns and preserve rich text in tables when importing or exporting. And as you can probably guess, Keynote 1.7 for iOS improves import/export with Microsoft PowerPoint, presentation themes and adds new slide transitions and print layouts. You'll also need the companion Pages 4.3, Numbers 2.3 and Keynote 5.3 for OS X to take full advantage of them.
LaCie d2 Now Comes with Thunderbolt, USB 3.0
LaCie continues its Thunderbolt and USB 3.0 hard drive invasion with this week's announcement that the company's popular, best-selling d2 model has been upgraded with universal connectivity for both high-speed ports. When combined with the latest 4TB 7200rpm hard drives inside, the company promises "shocking speeds" of up to 180MB/s from a single drive -- twice the speed of FireWire 800 and nearly four times faster than poky ol' USB 2.0. The new Thunderbolt and USB 3.0 LaCie d2 with design by Neil Poulton is available in either 3TB or 4TB capacities starting at $299.00, direct from the LaCie Online Store or your favorite reseller.
Eye-Fi Introduces Circ Photo Sharing Service
The makers of the Eye-Fi wireless SD card are just about ready to unveil their next big product in the photography market with Circ, a free unlimited storage photo sharing service that promises to put "every photo where you want it." For now, that appears to be limited to the iPhone, Android, Windows and the web, but a Mac client is promised. While the service is free, you'll have to first jump through a couple of hoops to become a beta tester if you want to climb on board today -- which mostly just involves giving Circ your first name, email address and selecting up to four platforms you can help the company test its wares on. Or, just toss 'em your email address and they'll let you know when the service is ready for public consumption.
FxFactory Adds Optics Plugin for Final Cut Pro X
Noise Industries has announced a new FxFactory plugin now available from its partners at Ripple Training called Optics. Available for Final Cut Pro X, Optics is a $39 plug-in that creates a first-person perspective through different sets of camera viewfinders, scopes and binoculars. Users have full control over the focus, position and scale and can even add thermal or night vision effects, animate scan lines, flicker and roll for a completely authentic look. A free trial is also available, so give it a whirl on your next Bond-style home movie!
Evernote Expands to Business Users
Where its Premium service is concerned, the folks at Evernote are not slowing down, announcing Evernote Business on Tuesday. At its heart, it's the same Evernote you already know and love, but Evernote Business adds new features aimed at small and medium-sized companies as well as small teams in larger organizations. These include a whopping 2GB per month of new content in Personal Notebooks, as well as an additional 2GB to share with co-works in Business Notebooks. Business Library collects selected Business Notebooks and makes them accessible to anyone in your organization, and the whole thing is admin-friendly as well. The service is rolling out now to customers in USA, Canada, France, Germany, Switzerland, Japan and the U.K. starting at $10 per user per month.
