The windows that pop up when you choose to open or save something on your Mac are perfectly good at what they do. But you can improve them a lot by installing and setting up Default Folder X. This is a little add-on app that costs $34.95, but you can try it for free for 30 days to see if you like it. It does a number of things and we're going to show you its key features and how to make the most of them.
Get Default Folder X by going to http://bit.ly/macdefaultfolderx and clicking Download on the right-hand side. When it's downloaded, double-click the DMG file that appears in your Downloads folder (to find it, click the Finder icon in your Dock, then click Go > Downloads). A disk will appear on your desktop – open this and double-click the installer, which will guide you through the process. If you're prompted, we recommend you choose to install it for all users on your Mac, so that anyone else who uses your machine can take advantage of it as well. As soon as it's installed, it's ready to use, so there's no need to restart it.
Default Folder X's icon appears in your Dock as well as in your menu bar, and it also has its own pane in System Preferences, where you control it. One thing to be aware of is that while there's an option to get at its preferences via the Dock or menu bar items, clicking these seems to make System Preferences hang. So to get at the settings screens, you need to open System Preferences manually, via the menu, and click Default Folder X at the bottom.
The application enables you to choose a particular folder on your Mac to appear in the Open or Save windows – this can be app-specific or system-wide. So, for example, if you like to save all your Pages files in one place, and your Numbers spreadsheets somewhere else, you can set a different folder for each. That way, when you come to save something in each app, you save time by not having to browse around to find the correct folder.
It also lets you add favorite folders, which appear in a pop-up menu alongside every Open or Save window; you can even create keyboard shortcuts for these. We'll look at how to set up these features and more on the opposite page.
