Could this be Nikon’s new D800 SLR, video-shooting successor to the frankly amazing D700? According to Nikon Rumors, the answer is yes. And as leaked shots go, these are a lot better than the usual shaky-cam nonsense we see.
The headline feature is of course video. The D700 had none, and trailed behind Canon’s full-frame 5DMkII in this respect. The rumors say that the D800 will shoot up to 1080p at 30, 25 and 24fps, and that it’ll come with some kind of audio input.
The other big change is the sensor, which will supposedly be a ridiculous 36MP. Say goodbye to hard disk space and low-light sensitivity. The maximum ISO remains at 6400, with a “hi” mode of 25,600. This is no improvement on the D700, likely thanks to all those extra pesky pixels.
Other bullet points say that the screen will be bigger than the current three inches, the the processor will be an Expeed 3, and that there will two card slots, one CF and one SD.
The body design is very similar. The focus area control has ben ousted in favor of a dedicated switch to select stills or video, and an incorporated live-view button. The top plate has a new video start button, and that appears to be about it (note that these photos show the camera with an optional battery grip).
We might not have long to wait to find out the truth. The Japanese launch could be this week (November 24th is what the Verge is saying), and the price could be around ¥300,000, or $3,900.
