Rumor: Magic Mouse Going Away, Not Coming Back

Magic Mouse Is Sad

Lion to mouse: Thanks for your help with that thorn and all, but it is time for you to go away.

Cult of Mac is laying claim to an "exclusive" report that Apple is sending the Magic Mouse out to pasture in favor of the Magic Trackpad.

Apple without a mouse? For serious??

According to their "previously reliable source," Cult of Mac states the "Magic Mouse inventory is not being replenished in Apple Stores" and Cupertino is "finally phasing out the Magic Mouse."

As we've discussed here and here, OS X Lion relies heavily on gestures that require a trackpad. MacBooks come with a trackpad capable of ten finger gestures, and the Magic Trackpad delivers that same touchy feely efficency to desktops like the iMac and Mac Mini.

So, this rumor might make sense, gestures are key to Lion, and there is no going back now that the big cat is out of the cage. But the irony is thick, both in that the company that brought the mouse to the masses with the Apple Lisa in 1983 is the first one to abandon it, and that it was the lion that killed off his old friend.
