How to Re-Arrange the Finder Sidebar

Apple has changed the sidebar in Mac OS X Lion so that the devices and local/external disk drives are at the bottom of the list. Some Mac faithful may not necessarily appreciate these changes, however. While Apple has not included a way to move these items back to the top of the Finder sidebar, there is a way to get some of the items at the top for easy access.

Lion's Finder sidebar now ships with the Favorites section at the top of the sidebar. While you can't move these headings around, you can get your local and external disks back near the top for easier access.

To do this, navigate to Finder > Preferences > Sidebar, and ensure that your computer name is checked in the Devices listing.

Once you have done this, click on your computer name in the Devices sidebar listing. You should see a list of the connected disk drives on your local machine. You can drag and drop any of the connected disks to the Favorites are of the sidebar.

The only items that you cannot drag to the sidebar are networked drives and computers. We can only hope that Apple includes the ability to re-arrange the sidebar headers in a future Mac OS X Lion update.
