More desktop space for less
Do you use your laptop as much as you should? Considering the amount of money you paid for it, it's surely worth putting your mobile Mac to work even when you're at your desk. With Air Display for Mac, you can harness its screen as a second display for your desktop computer.
Air Display runs in the background, adding a small icon to your primary Mac's menu bar. From there, you can turn Air Display on, selecting any available Mac running the free companion application. You can even use iOS devices running the $9.99 iOS app (yup, your iPad can be your second monitor!). Choose a screen, and OS X will adjust to the new display, incorporating the additional space on your secondary machine. Like a standard external display, the arrangement of your screens can be adjusted through System Preferences > Displays.
Extend your Mac's desktop with another Mac's screen.
We tested the software with a 27-inch iMac that already had an external display attached via the Mini DisplayPort and had no trouble adding a MacBook as a third screen with Air Display. Unfortunately, it's not possible to add more than one Air Display device to the mix at a time, which left our iPad feeling a little left out.
Despite a tiny amount of latency when using Air Display (a few milliseconds at most), our Wi-Fi–connected MacBook functioned just like any other external display, providing full control of the screen and the seamless experience we've come to expect from OS X. While not ideal for video playback or other graphics-intensive tasks, this wireless display method is perfect for storing more static windows like Mail or a Twitter client. Connecting to a hardwired Ethernet network did improve the speed, but that isn't likely to be a practical solution for most users.
Previous versions of Air Display we tested were dogged by Wi-Fi signal drops that meant the connection and desktop extension were lost. This latest release is much more stable, and our multiple-Mac setup performed perfectly over stretches of several hours at a time.
The bottom line. If Spaces isn't cutting it and you don't want to fork out for an additional display, make use of one you already own.
