Can You Charge Me Now? Smartphone App Locates EV Charging Stations and More

Sales of electric vehicles and plug-in hybrids are still a tiny proportion of the U.S. market, but as the price of gas rises and automakers plan introduction after introduction of such vehicles, the demand for away-from-home charging will explode. The ChargePoint network—which, for today, is the largest network of EV charging stations in the country—has an app to serve as the virtual xanax for those range anxiety nerves.

The app tells users the location of the closest station, whether it's vacant or in use by another EV driver, and whether it's free or for-pay. Once your car is jacked into a station, ChargePoint's app allows for significant remote control: price for the charging sessions (if there is one), charging status, and even the ability to stop and start charging. It's free for Blackberry and iPhone users; Androidites are left in the lurch.
