LAS VEGAS — Motorola and LG are going head to head with phones that they claim are the fastest in the world.
Motorola on Wednesday launched the Atrix 4G (above), a smartphone featuring Nvidia's brand-new Tegra 2 dual-core processor.
LG, too, recently launched the Optimus 2x (.pdf) pictured below, also equipped with a Tegra 2 processor, which the company highlighted at its Consumer Electronics press conference.
It's interesting to see phone manufacturers bragging about processor cores in devices that are typically low-powered and running lightweight apps compared to the average computer.
This makes sense particularly for Android phones. Two cores enable a CPU to process two tasks simultaneously much faster than a single-core chip. Therefore, the Tegra 2 could take advantage of the Android OS's beefy multitasking capabilities.
Each phone is flexing muscle in a different way, however. Motorola's Atrix boasts compatibility with 4G, AT&T's newest and supposedly fastest cellular network.
As for the Optimus 2x, LG is highlighting the smartphone's ability to record and play 1080p video content.
Which phone is the more powerful? Here are the full specs of each handset for quick comparison:
Atrix 4G
- 1-GHz NVidia Tegra 2 processor
- 4-inch 24-bit display
- 1 GB RAM
- Up to 48 GB memory storage
- Fingerprint recognition
- Android 2.2 OS
- 5-megapixel rear camera and VGA front camera
LG Optimus 2X
- 1-GHz NVidia Tegra 2 processor)
- 4-inch WVGA screen

- 1,500 mAh battery

Just glancing at the specs, both phones look pretty powerful. We'll have a better idea of which is better after some hands-on time with each device. We'll keep you posted on impressions after some demos on the show floor.
