Star Wars Arcade: Falcon Gunner Review

If there's a universal truth, it's this: anyone who's seen the original Star Wars trilogy wanted to pilot the Millennium Falcon at some point in their lives. This was the fastest hunk of junk in the galaxy, capable of anything you could imagine, and you wanted to fly it--no matter what.

THQ's Star Wars Arcade: Falcon Gunner works to bring this to life. The game inserts you into the driver seat as the role of a crewmember aboard the Millennium Falcon, where you'll relive such classic scenes as the escape from the Death Star in "A New Hope", the asteroid field battle in "Empire Strikes Back" and a special take on the occasional Imperial Star Destroyer, for good measure.

In addition to the impressive graphics and realistic sounds, the game piles on the extras like augmented reality support, online leaderboards, access to social networking, a useful tutorial system, auto-aiming, and weapons and upgrades that can be purchased in-game or online for 99 cents apiece.

In spite of its promise, Star Wars Arcade: Falcon Gunner emerges as a mixed bag. The game shines in terms of multitasking and stability under iOS 4.2.1, but it doesn't feel entirely polished. The quad laser cannon can become tricky to maneuver accurately, the auto-aiming feature makes you wonder exactly what the game is aiming at and the same classic Star Wars lines on repeat make it sound like a Disneyland ride stuck on the tracks. There's a good idea and a fun game to be had here, but there's also a "version 1.0" feeling that can't be escaped. While it's one thing to have a learning curve for a game, it's another for the main weapon to be difficult to aim without any degree of accuracy.

Bottom line: Software updates exist for a reason, and if an untrained farm boy can blow up a space station and help redeem his father in the process, there could be something good down the line.
