Tesla Motors Gigafactory

We made our gigafactory predictions the other day and, it turns out, we were pretty much on target. Today, Tesla Motors released the first official details on its upcoming massive battery plant and we see sun and wind power feeding energy into a plant that will employ around 6,500 people and make enough packs for around a half-million Tesla EVs a year. You read that right. Tesla is getting ready to produce 500,000 EVs a year, and that's already in 2020. Tesla hopes to start selling a lower-cost EV, the Model E, in about three years.

The finalists for where the Gigafactory will be built include the Southwestern states of Nevada, Arizona, New Mexico and Texas (our money is on Nevada). We were a little low on the estimated battery output. Instead of being able to make 30 Gigawatt-hours of batteries per year, Tesla is saying that it will have enough capacity to produce 35 GWh of cells and 50 GWh of packs a year. We think that's for both EVs and stationary applications and have reached out to Tesla for confirmation on this point. You can see the details for yourself here and in our gallery below.

Through 2020, Tesla will directly invest around $2 billion in the plant and its partners will pony up another $2-3 billion for a total cost of $4-5 billion. That's a lot of cash, but Tesla says that it will make buying an EV much, much cheaper. The company is saying that, once the plant is up and running for the first year, the per-kWh cost of a Tesla battery pack will be lowered by "more than 30 percent." Maybe that Model E isn't such a pipe dream after all.

Also today, Tesla announced a new convertible notes offering worth $1.6 billion. Details are available in the press release below.

Zelectric Bug

No word a lie, we here at AutoblogGreen are fans of classic cars. What we are not fond of, however, is the pollution that their inefficient engines create, and so it's great to see our old favorites lovingly up-cycled with electric drivetrains. The ZelectricBug is a beautiful example of how new, cleaner life can be breathed into an old Volkswagen Beetle.

Now, we first came across this particular automobile during the Refuel event last summer and we were struck by its cleanly done conversion then. Aside from a few snaps in our gallery, though, we didn't give it the kind of attention it deserves. Fortunately, the good folks over at Roads and Rides have rectified this by turning their pro video camera skills onto the 1963 V-Dub and producing a nice little segment to accompany their write up.

Scroll below to see the finished footage and head over to their website for some stills. If all this gives you a hankering for your own Zelectric, the company does have plans to sell to the public starting this summer. If you don't want to wait, EV West, the guys who did the drivetrain work on this car, have conversion kits available for Beetles, as well as a number of other vehicles.

// Engadget 中文版

Apple adding hundreds of new engineers and operations staff in China to speed development of larger iPhones [feedly]

Apple adding hundreds of new engineers and operations staff in China to speed development of larger iPhones

China Foxconn

Apple is on a mass hiring spree for Asian staff, beginning in the middle of last year, as noted by the Wall Street Journal. The Journal says that Apple is trying to speed up product development in China and Taiwan to help launch a larger lineup of devices. Apparently, the company is aggressively hiring away from HTC and other firms to form strong product teams in Asia.

The hires indicate Apple is preparing for 'faster and more frequent product launches' according to the Journal. The paper reiterates that Apple is working on bringing two larger-screen iPhones to market this year. It is also increasing the number of supply chain managers to help combat criticism about working conditions. The report says that Apple's operations staff in China now tops 600 people.

Last August, Apple used the professional networking website LinkedIn to reach out individually to engineers at HTC and its Taiwanese suppliers Inventec Corp. and Quanta Computer Inc., among others.

"Apple is building an engineering team in Taipei to drive new iPhone product development," Apple said in one recruiting email obtained by The Wall Street Journal.

Apple also has been hiring for its main Asian base in Shanghai, where it moved into a new three-building complex last year, people familiar with the matter said.

The Journal makes clear that "core research and development" remains firmly in Apple's Cupertino headquarters. The Far Eastern positions revolve around the development of current components, like cameras and screens.

CarPlay [feedly]

// iPhone4.TW 與您分享一切美好事物與新知 - 8,12,23,39,42,51,116,119,130,131,132,347

這邊說到「Let your iPhone show your way」讓我不禁懷疑,是iPhone投射到車上?

不然應該會說 let CarPlay來 show your way吧~

所以iPhone5/5C/5S的夥伴有福啦

原來要插上iPhone5/5C/5S

The Ring Input Device Puts Gesture Control And Home Automation On Your Finger [feedly]

The Ring Input Device Puts Gesture Control And Home Automation On Your Finger
// TechCrunch » Gadgets
There was once a rumor that Apple would actually use a ring device for input to an Apple television. Neither of those gadgets exist yet, of course, but Ring is a Kickstarter project trying to fund a finger-based wearable that could enable the kind of controls envisioned in that Apple flight of fancy. The Ring is a hardware device that resembles an ordinary (if slightly chunky) ring, filled with… Read More
