Marco Makes It Easy to Find Your Friends

We've all had that frustrating experience of trying to meet up with a friend at a crowded park or a concert: One of you is peering into the massive sea of people, the other is standing hundreds of feet away, waving their arms like a lunatic. You're texting each other or talking distractedly on the phone as you try to locate each other visually. It's painful.

Assuming one of you has an iPhone, you should try using Marco.

It's a free iPhone app that lets you share your exact location with a friend. Marco makes it painless to meet up in a crowded place, because it provides real-time updates about where Person A and Person B are, by plotting both of you on a map you can both see. The map updates as you move.

The best part may be that you can share your location with any phone that has a browser, so it still works if your friend doesn't have an iPhone.

The free app is available in the App Store. If you're searching from your iPhone, you want Marco friend locator — searching for just Marco returns Instapaper creator Marco Arment as the top result.

Open it up and you'll see a map centered on your current location. Tap the big green "Find Your Friend" button, and enter anyone from your address book. Marco sends your friend an SMS with a web link. When they click on the link inside the SMS, they see a map of where you are, and they're invited to share their location.

Here's the cool part — the receiving end works through the browser, so the other person doesn't need any apps, and it works across mobile platforms.

When your friend opens the web link, Marco uses the Geolocation API through the browser to grab his or her location and update the web service. Within Marco, you'll see a "Polo" update (clever!) when your friend pops up on the map.

As you both move around, the maps stay in sync. You can both watch your locations change as you walk towards each other: You see your friend moving in the Marco app, and your friend sees you moving on the web page. Marco can also spit out directions if you're in unfamiliar te...

2011 iPad 銷售量28 million, iPhone 52 million

UBS analyst Maynard Um has raised his stock price target for Apple, Inc. to $350 from $340. The move comes as Um predicts upwards of 28 million iPads could be sold in 2011; a number the analyst described as "conservative." Mr. Um is also predicting 52 million iPhones to be sold in the 2011 calendar year. Um continued: "We continue to favor product plays such as Apple as the company should have some of the most highly sough referred t after products in the holiday quarter. Despite tough economic conditions, consumers remain willing to pay for innovation. Despite increasing competition in smartphones and that which is soon to come in tablets, Apple's ability to keep its products fresh and innovative gives us confidence in our estimates going forward." Unlike 2010, the iPad will be competing with multiple Android tablet devices — such as Samsung's Galaxy Tab — that offer similar functionality in 2011.

Word Biblical Commentary

The Word Biblical Commentary is now available for download, and we're celebrating with a big sale!

For years, the Word Biblical Commentary has been one of our bestselling commentaries. This series emphasizes a thorough analysis of textual, linguistic, structural, and theological evidence. It contains contributions from some of the leading biblical scholars of our time.

The WBC has been available for Logos Bible Software for quite some time, but only as a CD-ROM. Having the WBC available for download is a milestone for Logos users, so we're celebrating with a big sale. For a limited time, you can get the 59-volume Word Biblical Commentary for $499.95. That works out to only $8.47 per volume—a phenomenal deal! Remember, the sale price is good for only a few weeks, so you should place your order today to get the special price.

Now Shipping: Logos 4 Mac

Mac

Today Is the Day!

After a lot of work and tons of anticipation, we are shipping Logos 4 Mac. We are celebrating this tremendous event with special discounts on all of our base packages and base package upgrades!

The completion of Logos 4 Mac is another huge step in our "one license, any platform" philosophy. Logos Bible Software makes it easy to access the resources in your library when and where you need them whether it is on Mac, Windows, iPhone, iPad, or on the web with Biblia.com.

I caught up with David Mitchell, the Macintosh Technical Lead, and asked him a few questions about the release of Logos 4 Mac.

The origins for Logos 4 Mac really go back to the very beginning of Logos 4 right?

Right. In mid-2006, the development team at Logos started working on an incredibly ambitious project that would eventually become Logos 4. We started by throwing out much of the work that had been done since 1999 and re-imagining what Bible study could be like. This was no small decision, but we realized that in order to take a leap forward, we'd need to start over.

So we chose new technologies. We redesigned features. We thought about how to make the product more approachable to the new or casual user. And we wrote code. Lots of code.

How did you get started working on the Mac product and where did you go from there?

About halfway through the development cycle for Logos 4, Libronix 1.0 for Mac was released, and I was given the opportunity to shift my attention to building Logos 4 for Mac. As we had done with Libronix for Windows, I eventually decided to scrap Libronix for Mac so that we could use all of new the code that had been written for Logos 4 for Windows. This, too, was no small decision, but we knew that it had to be done if we wanted to make the best Bible study experience anywhere available to Mac users.

So we chose even more new technologies. We redesigned code so that it was more portable. We thought about how the ideas we had come up with for Logos 4 would fit best within the context of a Macintosh application. And we hired developers: the team working on Logos 4 for Macintosh today is the same size that the Windows team was when I joined in early 2006.

It sounds like it was a lot of work.

Along the way, many on the team have endured sleepless nights working on code or helping just one more user on the forums. We opened an office in Bellevue and brought in extra developers to help us finish more quickly. And we were robbed . . . twice.

Catching up to the Windows version of Logos 4 has been no small task, but delivering Logos 4 for Mac to you today makes it all worthwhile. I hope everyone enjoys using it as much as I've enjoyed writing it.

Logos wants to thank the Mac team for their long hours and tireless work in getting us to where we are today.

Remember, you don't have to be a Mac user to help us celebrate the release of Logos 4 Mac. Take advantage of our special discounts on all of our base packages and base package upgrades.

I Love October

I must admit I love October for a few reasons. My birthday falls very early in October along with my husband's birthday which falls a few days after mine so there's always lots of giving and receiving for us in October...Even at 33 I still love getting presents in bed on the morning of my Birthday!!

I always seem to get a bit of a personal decorating bug in October. I think it has something to do with the pending emails from suppliers advising of their upcoming pre-Christmas order cut-off dates. The thought of them closing their books for the year without a few little tidbits for home makes me a bit demented. Every night this week I've trawled a boot-load of fabric samples home for consideration and let me tell you I'm not really the most popular person in our house at the moment as every time one of the boys walks past the lounge room I ask...."And what about this fabric?" They are completely over it.
I also love the buzz of clients at this time of year as they too recognize the fact that if they don't make a decision now then it will be all over red rover until next year.
The other thing I like about October is the weather and all the flowering gardens around the place. Even just driving into work is a pleasure as flowers are blooming everywhere. The Jacaranda trees are also just starting to bloom which puts a beautiful purplish haze over Brisbane.
There are just so many lovely things to enjoy in October starting this weekend. We must also recognize that October is Breast Cancer Awareness month. For more information visit the National Breast Cancer website here. Mrs Blandings always posts pink in October so here's a little hint of pink above from a pink girl through and through.
Happy October Everyone!
