Mobislyder offers low-level roll track for filming, gleams the cube

You tried to shoot a quick handheld movie with your smartphone the other night. And it wound up looking like you shot it in the middle of an earthquake. Before putting your video editing application's "Analyze for Stabilization" feature to the test, have a gander at Glidetrack's Mobislyder. Essentially a combination of a roll track and a skateboard, the Mobislyder ships with a variety of mounts to fit a selection of smartphones, camcorders and compact cameras. This, combined with four non-rolling feet and a swivel mount, allow the Mobislyder to be used at almost any low angle. That thing you're peering at above is available for $135, which could be a solid deal for a good, steady, sliding platform to shoot from. Or, it could be $96 more than the parts you picked up from Radio Shack and Home Depot to perform the exact same function. A full video demo awaits after the break.

Harvard-designed 'soft robot' shows you how low it can go (video)

It's the stuff of slow-moving robopocalyptic nightmares: a 'soft robot' designed by a team of Harvard scientists that draws inspiration from invertebrates like worms and starfish. The wired 'bot is made from a flexible elastomer material that allows it to squeeze into spaces that are inaccessible for more traditional robots. Inside are chambers that inflate and deflate, allowing the thing to undulate forward. Definitely check out the robot in action after the break.

Siri lends a hand via your Bluetooth-enabled car stereo, reminds you to buy milk (video)

Sure, we've seen Siri used to do a host of things, including controlling the temperature in a hacker's home. But the folks over at Autoblog were curious to know just how well the virtual assistant would work with Bluetooth-enabled car stereos. Once your iPhone 4S is properly tethered, holding down the handset's home button will activate Siri. Treating her as an incoming call, your Notorious B.I.G. playlist will pause before the ready-for-command chime sounds. The in-car assistant was tested on two Mercedes-Benz automobiles, a Chrysler 300, a Dodge Charger and a Nissan Maxima, with the Maxima showcasing the best results. It comes as no surprise that mic placement on each stereo and in-cabin background noise provided a noticeable difference in Siri's listening abilities during the test. For a glimpse of the action before trying it out yourself, hit the video just past the break.

SSTL designs cheap radar satellite, UK government kicks in £21 million to build it

While we have an innate fear of the eye in the sky (and the role it'll play in the coming robot apocalypse), there's no doubt that observation satellites do a lot of good -- from recording weather and climate changes to helping coordinate relief efforts in the wake of natural disasters. Surrey Satellite Technology Ltd. (SSTL) has plans to beef up planetary monitoring capabilities with its new NovaSAR satellite, and the company just received £21 million from the UK government to make it happen. NovaSAR works using synthetic aperture radar, so it can see through clouds (unlike optical satellites) and offers its services for £45 million -- or 20 percent of the cost of existing space radar platforms. With governmental funding in hand, SSTL can begin to develop and build its first such satellite, and the plan is to put it in orbit in two or three years. If NovaSAR does what it's been designed to do, SSTL hopes it can sell and launch enough of them so that any place on earth can be under its gaze in less than 24 hours. We're all for improving disaster relief efforts, but if you spy these sats overhead on a clear night, we recommend keeping an ear to the ground in case they're guiding an army of Alpha Dogs your way.

More iPad 3 Replacement Parts Begin Circulating as Rumors Ramp Up

Japanese blog Macotakara has purchased some of the early iPad 3 parts that have been circulating at online retailers. These parts come from TVC-Mall which also stocked early iPhone 4S parts in the months before its launch. (via Electronista)

The parts are slightly different than the iPad 2 versions of the same parts, but are otherwise unrevealing.

We track parts supplies of upcoming Apple products as it is typically a sign that Apple has begun or is close to manufacturing their new devices. Parts leaks in the past have accurately predicted features of new devices, though these particular internal parts aren't particularly revealing. Cases and device enclosures are typically the most interesting of the early supplier leaks.

Apple is expected to launch the iPad 3 in early 2012. Reports have suggested a launch anywhere from January to April, with more recent reports suggesting an earlier launch. The iPad 3 will likely carry a high resolution "Retina" display as one of its distinguishing features.

Is facial recognition Apple’s next big innovation refinement?

Apple has a track record of taking products that work but haven't caught on and redesigning them to give them the appeal that makes them catch fire with the general buying public. The iPad is one good example, and Siri is another. Now, there's a new patent that suggests Apple could tackle facial recognition next.

A patent application published by the USPTO on Dec. 29 and spotted by Patently Apple describes a system for presence detection that builds on two earlier patents Apple filed related to the technology, but this time with a specific take aimed at its use in mobile devices. Prior patents dealt with presence detection on MacBooks, and advanced recognition systems for use in processor-heavy home and business applications, but this one combines sophistication with a light footprint for practical, everyday mobile use.

Source: Patently Apple

Having recently used the Samsung Galaxy Nexus for a while, what Apple's new patent proposes to fix about presence detection sounds appealing. It describes a system in which lighting conditions, angles and scale could all be accounted for, making face recognition usable on mobiles without strict caveats and conditions. The Galaxy Nexus's ICS face unlock feature is cute, but that's about as far as it goes, since it fails to match in most cases and also can be fooled with a still photograph of the subject who set it up.

Apple's new method would use shortcuts to accurately determine who's using a device, without requiring the heavy computational costs normally involved in such a process, by ignoring face biometrics and judging the position of features to compensate for changes in subject orientation. Other advantages include a built-in feature that judges a person's level of attentiveness when using the system, which could help it avoid being duped by still photographs.

The new patent also describes other neat tricks, like recognizing other faces among your family members, friends and co-workers and delivering different screen savers or non-secured information to those individuals. That's a great step for shared use devices, and sounds like it could even eventually be used to set different parental restriction levels for family members who share an iPad, for instance.

Apple specifically envisions the tech for use in iPhone, iPad, iPod touch and MacBook devices, and although patents sometime never see practical application, this one does seem both useful and realistically achievable in the next couple of years. It would definitely add to Apple's personal edge in combination with its Siri assistant, and could make iOS devices even more accessible to a broader swath of the population than they already are.

What do you think? Is this the next place we can expect Apple to take a good thing and make it better?

Study finds small, medium businesses considering iPads

The iPad is popular, so popular that analysts have blamed the tablet for declining consumer netbook and notebook sales. While consumers may be buying tablets in lieu of PCs, small to medium businesses are not. A pair of recent surveys from the NPD group suggest businesses will continue to buy PCs along with tablets in 2012.

As reported by AppleInsider, a recent tablet survey from NPD's quarterly SMB Technology Monitor shows that 73% of businesses with less than 1,000 employees plan to buy tablets for their employees. Almost all of these tablets will be from Apple as the word "tablet" is synonymous with iPad says Stephen Baker, vice president of industry analysis at NPD. Most companies plan to spend about $21,000 on new tablet purchases in the upcoming year.

At the same time, these small to medium businesses will continue to buy PCs for their workforce. Less than 20 percent of companies with 999 employees or less plan to reduce spending on PCs. The remaining 80 percent will spend the same or more on PCs in 2012 than they did in 2011. On average, both small and medium-sized businesses will replace 10 to 15 percent of their PCs in the upcoming year.

These surveys suggest 2012 will be a terrific year for corporate employees at small to medium-sized businesses. Some of you will be getting new office PCs, and many of you will be handed an iPad for your business use.

Stanford archives offer look into Apple history

For Apple history buffs, the Stanford University's Silicon Valley Archives offers a firsthand glimpse into the company's past as it is the largest collection of historic material on Apple available. The Associated Press got a glimpse into the material, which was one time slated for an Apple museum that never materialized. Apple made the donation in 1997, which now makes up a significant portion of the archive's Apple Collection.

Donated materials, which were added to substantially over the years by employees and Mac fans, include blueprints for the very first Apple computer, thousands of photos documenting Steve Jobs' time at NeXT Computer, a tongue-in-cheek company video parodying "Ghostbusters" and more.

Apple patent reveals face detection system with multi-user logins for iOS devices and MacBooks

Much like the somewhat controversial face unlock feature built-in to Google's Galaxy Nexus smartphone, a new patent application reveals Apple too is working on similar, but more advanced user detection solutions. As PatentlyApple pointed out, Apple noted these recognition systems could land in a future iPhone, iPad, iPod touch, or MacBook.

The basics of the patent entitled "Low Threshold Face Recognition," is to allow a user to unlock a device—such an iPhone or iPad—using facial recognition. Apple's solution could allow the device's camera to recognize the user even when the device is in sleep mode. In other words, the device's camera would remain active when sleeping, detect the user, and unlock the device without having to press the sleep/wake button. This could, in theory, allow a user to bypass the current Slide to Unlock feature.

Perhaps the most interesting aspect of the system would be the ability for the device's settings to be customized depending on the user. For example, when detecting a specific user, iOS could set personalized wallpapers, notification settings, and custom configurations for apps. This would provide multiple user logins, allowing iOS users to easily share a device among family or coworkers.

Apple's system would differ from other face recognition systems by ignoring face biometrics. As PatentlyApple explained, "The face recognition techniques are based on a simple, weighted difference map, rather than traditional (and computationally expensive) correlation matching." Apple's system could detect "high information portions" of a face such as the eyes, mouth, or the tip of a nose. In addition, an "orange-distance filter" could be applied to determine variations in skin tone and detect the "likely presence" of a user. This could detect the distance between the device and the user's face, as well as the user's "level of attentiveness."

In 2010, before the iPad launch, The Wall Street Journal reported Apple was experimenting with the ability to recognize individual users with the device's camera. Today's patent was originally filed in 2009.

In November, another Apple patent surfaced detailing a method of advanced 3D object recognition and verification that could be potentially implemented in everything from security systems to maps.

Mujjo gloves as good as skin on iOS devices, but better insulated

Winter is finally in full effect here in Toronto, with a couple of very cold days in the past week that gave me the perfect opportunity to test a pair of Mujjo touchscreen gloves. These gloves are woven throughout with silver-coated conductive fibers to allow them to work with capacitive screens, like the ones on your iPhone and iPad, and their unique design makes them better suited than most for the task.

Touchscreen gloves, not touchscreen finger tips

A big problem I've had with previous versions of touchscreen gloves has been that other manufacturers seem to think a couple conductive pads on the index and middle finger will make sure you're covered. But sometimes that approach means using them will result in missed touches, and make using devices fiddly and generally inconvenient.

The Mujjo gloves get around that limitation by featuring conductive thread throughout the entire weave of the glove's body; literally any part of it, including the cuff, can activate your device's touchscreen. When you're trying to find directions in the middle of a snowstorm so dense you can only see about a foot in front of you, this makes a big difference.

Comfortable and sturdy

Mujjo's gloves fit, pardon the pun, like a glove. They come in two size ranges: S/M and M/L, and are designed to stretch to accommodate different hand shapes. My M/L are a perfect fit, and the S/M worked as well for my girlfriend. They have a dense weave that means you won't see skin through any holes anywhere on the glove, even when stretched. And they should also stand up to a fair bit of abuse; they don't feel delicate or liable to start coming apart at the seams anytime soon, and I used them for a fair amount of outdoor rough-housing with my (admittedly small and relatively gentle) dog. Note however that the Mujjo gloves are not machine washable, and should only be washed by hand with cold water and laid flat to dry.

Warm, but not the warmest

While the Mujjo gloves were more than adequate at most temperatures, they did not deal well with the extreme cold of a day that reached around 1 or 2 degrees Fahrenheit. They were still better than nothing at those lows, but I still felt the need to use my pockets with fair frequency. At more reasonable temperatures of around 20 to 23 Fahrenheit, the gloves proved more than comfortable, even during longer periods of 30 minutes or more outside.

The total package

I've tried a few touchscreen-compatible gloves, but the Mujjos are already my favorite. They look good (though they do only come in one color), they feel good on the hand and provide adequate warmth, and they work as well as bare skin on every capacitive touchscreen I could find to test them with. At around $32 U.S. per pair plus shipping, they aren't exactly cheap, but if touchscreen compatibility is what you're after, these gloves are a bargain.

Report: Investors' advice to Proton: Sell Lotus

There's a lot of smoke going on over at Lotus, but we still have a while to wait before we get the first evidence of fire: the new Lotus Espirit and it's in-house V8 won't be here until 2013. On the other side of the world, there's a fair bit of smoke and fire happening at Malaysian automaker Proton, which owns Lotus.

The Malaysian government controls Proton and has been investigating a partnership for or sale of the company for a couple of years, but despite its efforts, it hasn't made any deals. The 28-year-old automaker has been losing large chunks of market share, and the government feels that sale to a well-funded global player would be the best solution to insure Proton's long-term future. Although it has named its chosen candidate for a purchase, it isn't clear if anyone has made any serious overtures to that end.

Outside observers believe the first thing Proton should do is get rid of Lotus. The mass-market Malaysian carmaker has almost nothing in common with the tiny, English niche sports car producer, and has done nothing but throw money at Lotus' carmaking arm since 1996 (Lotus Engineering, the technology consultancy, is profitable).

Proton has said it has no intention of selling Lotus. However, if Proton is sold then the new owners could reverse that stance. And if Lotus were unloaded, that puts everything CEO Dany Bahar has planned in serious doubt.

现款大众Multivan

Mitsubishi to Launch Eight Electric Vehicles by 2016, Including a Light Truck

Mitsubishi has achieved decent amounts of success with the i-MiEV electric car in its home land, and also in Europe, where this model is also sold badged as a Peugeot iOn.

Next month, the i-MiEV will be going on sale in America (called simply the "i" in our market), which will no doubt increase sales numbers of this innovative commuter car.

Not ones to rest on their laurels, Mitsubishi has announced an ambitious plan to electrify themselves, by producing eight electric-vehicles by 2016.  These will include plug-in hybrids and full electric vehicles.

Part of this new plan is to produce small SUV's and light trucks which will attract farmers, contractors, and others who use light trucks as part of their work.

Mitsubishi is well under way with this new project, and expects to put its electric truck on sale globally by April 2013. It's not clear if the light truck will be part of Mitsubishi's North American line-up, but its other electric vehicles will be available here.

Mitsubishi hopes to sell 42,000 electric vehicles in 2012, double the number it moved this fiscal year. The American market is a crucial part of Mitsubishi's goals. The "i" car as mentioned before will go on sale soon with a starting price of $29,125, minus the Government rebates.

New Honda NSX to Debut at North American International Auto Show in Detroit

Honda is bringing its famous NSX sports car back to life, only this time it will be packaged as a 400 hp hybrid model and will be sporting a unique powertrain system.

The NSX will be driven by a 3.5L V6 gasoline direct injection engine which will be strictly devoted to driving the front axle of the vehicle. The rear wheels will be powered by two in-wheel electric motors that operate independently of each other. This independent electric motor setup makes the car capable of delivering different power levels to the inside and outside wheels while cornering and maneuvering to add responsiveness and tighter handling.

Honda debuted this electric SH-AWD setup in late November (see here) but never announced officially when the system would see production or in what vehicle it would make its debut. The original SH-AWD system was paired with a new dual clutch seven speed automatic transmission which may or may not find its way into the NSX.

Representatives at Honda say that the primary focus of the system is to increase fuel economy while keeping power and handling intact.

In terms of looks, we have already seen spy photos from the set of the new Avengers movie(Pictured Above), so we can only assume the finished product will be heavily influenced by that early model. The NSX will bow at the Detroit auto show badged as an Acura, but will be re-branded as a Honda when it hits the streets in the UK.

Toyota Says it Received 60,000 Orders for New Aqua Hybrid in Japan Before Launch

The new Aqua is off to an excellent start in Japan as Toyota revealed that it had already received pre-orders for 60,000 cars ahead of the sub-compact hybrid hatchback's launch on Monday, December 26. That's five times the company's monthly sales target of 12,000 cars in Japan.

"It will take about four months to receive the car once an order is placed," Toyota managing officer Koei Saga told reporters during a media briefing earlier this week.
