Weekend Recap: Pogoplug Cloud Goes Unlimited, iBooks 3.0, Skitch Update
Call us rebels, but we can't condone phony limitations such as data caps or restrictions on cloud storage. That's why the quiet introduction of a $4.95 unlimited plan to Pogoplug Cloud piqued our interest on Friday. Unlimited cloud storage for dirt cheap with no file size limits? The mere idea makes us want to ditch Dropbox, Box and all the rest of 'em. If that's how you feel, read on to find out if the dream of an unlimited cloud actually delivers.
Pogoplug Offers $5 Per Month Unlimited Cloud Storage
Still searching for a low-cost cloud storage plan without limits? The folks at Pogoplug announced Friday the addition of its new Unlimited Cloud, which promises to "store everything, share anything and access from anywhere," all for the insanely low price of only $4.95 per month. Where services like Dropbox tend to be stingy with the storage and more generous providers like Box (who frequently give away 25GB or even 50GB of storage) limit uploads to 100MB, Pogoplug has no such limitations, and cloud data can be accessed via web, Mac or PC and mobile apps for iOS or Android. Best of all, the deal does not require the hardware Pogoplug is best known for. The company offers 5GB free if you want to try it out, but at five bucks a month, we jumped on it and started uploading like crazy, and so far it all works just like they say.
French iTunes Leaks Existence of iBooks 3.0
We already own a third-gen iPad, so the rumored announcement this week of a smaller "iPad mini" is pretty ho-hum to us. So what else might we expect on Tuesday? According to a report from 9to5Mac, it appears iBooks is going to get a bump to version 3.0 -- and the leak comes from none other than Apple themselves. A comic book listed in the French iTunes Store curiously lists "iBooks 3.0 or later" as part of its system requirements, even though no such version yet exists. Apple's last major version introduced digital textbooks, so what new ground might iBooks 3.0 break? Not a clue, but stay tuned tomorrow and see what Cupertino has in store for us.
Skitch for Mac Brings Back the Menu Bar Helper
Longtime Skitch fans were mostly horrified by Evernote's recent feature-stripped 2.0 release of the Mac annotation app, but it appears the company is listening. On Friday, Evernote announced a Skitch for Mac 2.0.2 update which brings back the menu bar helper, which allows users to take screenshots even when the app isn't running. The update hasn't hit the Mac App Store at this writing, but is available from the Evernote website, and also promises "some nice text editing improvements" in addition to general reliability enhancements.
Apple Retail Stores Now Stocking iPhone 5 Cases, Screen Protectors
Apple traditionally is quite good about making third-party cases available at the same time as a new device, but here we are a month after the release of the iPhone 5 and there's not a case in sight at retail. According to 9to5Mac, that's about to change judging from photos submitted by a couple of eagle-eyed tipsters, who spotted the availability of both cases as well as screen protectors for Cupertino's latest handset at an Apple retail store near them. If you're still in the market for a case and haven't turned to mail-order or online, it might be worth venturing out and seeing what you can find in your own Apple store now.
Best Buy Offering Nokia Lumia 920 Preorders
WPCentral reported on Sunday that retailer Best Buy is now accepting preorders for Nokia's latest Lumia 920 handset, which is expected to be released shortly after the official rollout of Windows Phone 8 on October 29. The preorder is noteworthy because neither Nokia nor Microsoft has said a peep about how much the handset will cost. Best Buy has apparently beat them to the punch, with online preorders now available in yellow, red, white, cyan or black for a mere $149.99 with new activation or $599.99 commitment-free. This is the AT&T model, which is listed as "reserve today, will ship when available" -- still no word on exactly when they'll hit stores. (We tried buying a commitment-free model but the site wouldn't let us add it to the cart, so the preorder may only be valid for contract customers right now.)
