Planner Pro Review
When it comes to apps for keeping track of your busy schedule, iOS users fall squarely into two camps: The first are perfectly happy with the faux leather of Apple's built-in Calendar, while others continually comb the App Store in search of a better solution. It's this second group that the developer of Planner Pro seek to appease with its latest effort.
Like Apple's solution, Planner Pro takes a skeuomorphic approach to its attractive, dark user interface, which we found a bit more pleasing to the eye. Planner Pro also makes great use of color so you can see where you stand at a glance. While Planner Pro 1.0 included extremely small type sizes -- particularly for those who prefer Month view -- developer BlueTags addressed this issue with the latest update, and type size is now identical to Apple's Calendar app. There's still no preference setting to change the size, but otherwise the update has gone a long way toward addressing our initial concerns.
Although the app touts syncing with iOS calendars and events, on first launch we were met with completely blank pages. However, after tapping the orange Calendar tag at upper left, the calendar suddenly populated with our data. A rainbow of colorful tabs at right quickly jumps to a desired month, and depending on the orientation of your iPad, tabs for Daily, Weekly, Monthly, or Task appear on the top (portrait) or left side (landscape). A green Search tab is also available, but you'll need to manually select between Event, Task, or Note modes before getting decent results.
The bottom line. Aside from the more eye-catching design, Planner Pro doesn't offer any significant advantage over Apple's built-in Calendar app. At $4.99, users will have to weigh exactly how much they dislike Calendar's brighter faux leather to decide if Planner Pro is right for them.
