Despite recent rumblings about an iPad 3 swinging into stores this fall alongside iOS 5 and the next iPhone, it appears more likely that we'll see it in early 2012, which is more in line with Apple's annual update schedule. The good news is, that so-called "Retina Display" rumor continues to persist.
MacRumors is reporting that Apple is hard at work on the iPad 3, which is expected to debut in early 2012 and not this fall, as recently rumored. Needless to say, the fact that Apple is working on the next-generation iPad isn't exactly news, but The Wall Street Journal is confirming those plans, complete with a 2048x1536 Retina Display upgrade similar to the one the iPhone 4 and fourth-gen iPod touch received last year.
"The next generation iPad is expected to feature a high resolution display -- 2048 by 1536 compared with 1024 by 768 in the iPad 2 -- and Apple's suppliers have already shipped small quantities of components for the sampling of the iPad 3," the new report reveals. "Suppliers said Apple has placed orders for a 9.7-inch screen device."
None of this by itself is particularly newsworthy, although the usual "people familiar with the situation" have told The Wall Street Journal not to expect the iPad 3 before early 2012, with a trial run starting in October ahead of full manufacturing. Apple is said to have already ordered "key components such as display panels and chips" for the next-gen iPad as well.
So what can we glean from this latest report? If you're still on the fence about buying a new iPad, there's probably no sense in waiting until the fall if you have your hopes up about those iPad 3 rumors. We're just sayin'…
