Apple Number One Mobile PC Manufacturer in the World

Apple is now the top mobile computer manufacturer in the world, according to the latest research from DisplaySearch. In the last quarter, Apple beat rival HP for first place, having shipped a total of 13.5 million units for year-over-year growth of 136 percent. 80 percent of those sales were iPads, which DisplaySearch counts as mobile computers.

Though some might argue that iPads and other tablets do not fall into the same category as traditional computers, the data suggests that they absolutely do.

According to DisplaySearch, notebook computers were up only 2 percent year-over-year last quarter, but down 2 percent compared to the first quarter of 2011. Tablet sales, however, including the iPad, jumped 70 percent last quarter compared to the first quarter of 2011, and were up 400 percent year-over-year.

Buying a tablet instead of a notebook makes a lot of sense to a lot of consumers, and manufacturers across the board (including Apple) have seen the effect of the iPad cutting into traditional computer sales.

Perhaps HP agreed when they reviewed this data and came to the same conclusion when they abruptly announced yesterday that they were taking their webOS and going home.
