Tim Cook Confirms $100M Investment in USA-Based Mac Manufacturing
Apple are no dummies, and surely they didn't expect it to take Mac owners long to discover that many of the new iMac models were being assembled in the USA once again -- but that appears to be only the beginning.
Bloomberg Businessweek has published an exhaustive Q&A with Apple CEO Tim Cook on Thursday in which the executive reflects on his freshman year at the helm of the iconic Mac, iPhone and iPad maker.
With Cook's background in manufacturing and supply chain, it's not surprising that the CEO is again grilled on the subject of Apple's products being made outside of the USA, and on page nine out of 11, it appears the company is committed to taking a big step backward in that regard next year.
"Next year we are going to bring some production to the U.S. on the Mac," Cook elaborated. "We've been working on this for a long time, and we were getting closer to it. It will happen in 2013. We're really proud of it."
And it won't come cheap: Cook claims Apple is investing more than $100 million into more "substantial" manufacturing in the USA that goes beyond simply assembly. While it's unlikely to be a return to the days of Cupertino's own Mac factory, Cook claims the company will be "working with people" and "investing our money" into this work.
While the "made in USA" headline is bound to be the big story, the entire Q&A is well worth a read for Apple fans looking to get better acquainted with the company's CEO.
