Angry Birds Movie Flinging onto Screens Summer 2016

Angry Birds Movie Flinging onto Screens Summer 2016

Angry BirdsToday is the third anniversary of the mega-popular Angry Birds game, and Rovio Entertainment celebrated by releasing Angry Birds 3.0. But the company wasn't done quite yet -- an Angry Birds movie is also in the works, and will hit movie screens everywhere in the summer of 2016.

According to Rovio, Despicable Me producer John Cohen will produce the 3D animated film. Former Marvel Studios chairman David Maisel will executive produce. The entire affair is backed by the seemingly overflowing coffers of Rovio Entertainment.

"I'm so excited and honored to be working on this film with [Rovio CEO] Mikael [Hed], David, and Rovio's incredibly talented game developers and artists," said John Cohen via press release. "From both an entertainment and strategic perspective, Rovio is at the forefront of game innovation and is trailblazing terrific new ways for Angry Birds fans to interact with these characters. I've personally spent countless hours playing the Angry Birds games over the last few years, which I can now happily justify as research for the movie."

Rovio will produce and back the film independently, paying for the film with what we can only assume is the crazy amount of money the company has made off Angry Birds in the past three years. Across all platforms, Angry Birds has moved more than one billion units.

Of course, we have no idea about the film's plot. How do you turn a casual game into a fleshed-out film, worthy of moviegoers' hard-earned cash? We're not sure, but it probably involves green pigs.
