iOS 6 Beta Already Allows Adding Digital Boarding Passes to Passbook

While Apple is sure to show its complete iOS 6 hand next Wednesday, it seems airlines may already be on board (pun intended) with the company's new Passbook app, which allows digital boarding passes to be held in one central place.

AppleInsider is reporting that a Virgin Australia passenger running the iOS 6 beta had an interesting surprise this week when the software popped up a prompt encouraging them to add a digital boarding pass to the new Passbook app.

"According to the Australian Business Traveller, the passenger checked in to a flight using the airline's mobile website on his iPhone, which recognized the digital boarding pass from Safari and displayed a prompt asking whether he wanted to add the digital ticket to Passbook, suggesting that Virgin Australia's mobile site is employing Apple's new '.pkpass' mime type," the report notes.

While iOS 6 betas have been in use since mid-June, this is the first reported sighting of a digital boarding pass in use with Passbook. Developers have had access to .pkpass since the first beta was released, so it's likely that Virgin has already implemented the feature ahead of the public release expected later this month.

The report was unclear on whether or not the passenger was able to actually board the plane using the Passbook app, however, given that iOS 6 remains in beta.
