Analog Live Blog: WWDC 2012 Keynote

Hit refresh!

11:53 "The products we make along with the apps you create CAN fundamentally change the world. And I can't think of a better reason for getting up in the morning." —Tim Cook

11:52 Tim Cook with the wrap up: Next-gen MacBook Pro. Mountain Lion $19.99 in July. iOS 6 in the fall with new Maps app.

11:51 Tim Cook back on stage to review. It's almost over.

11:51 iOS 6 ships to everyone else in the fall. iPhone 3GS and later, 3rd and 4th gen iPod touch, iPads.

11:50  Devs get a beta of iOS 6 today. They are pleased with this news.

11:50 Lots of new APIs for the developers: Reminders, Passbook, maps, control camera focus and exposure, transit apps promoted in Maps app, etc.

11:49 Lost Mode: If you lose your iPhone, send a phone number to that phone. Finder taps it to call you. (You hope.)

11:48 200+ new feature in iOS 6. Better privacy. Game Center challenges. Lost Mode. Made for iPhone hearing aids.

11:47 "So, a brand-new mapping solution from the ground up in iOS 6." Forstall.

11:47 ETA updated. Kids can ask "Are we there yet?" and Siri tells them, "Relax and enjoy the ride. You'll get there in 14 minutes." Hee!

11:46 Shows off turn-by-turn directions. Tap QuickRoute button, pick a route, start. Siri tells him where to turn. Shows buildings. Counts down feet.

11:45 Shows Flyover of Transamerica Pyramid. Renders in real time, you can change the angle, etc. So cool.

11:44 Demo of the Maps app. Responsive, well designed. 3D map view so you can see what buildings look like. This puts the current Maps app to shame.

11:43 Flyover feature in Maps has 3D photographic models of lots of places. Very pretty.

11:42 Turn by Turn even works from the lock screen. And of course it's integrated with Siri. Ask questions along the route (looks for gas stations, you'll pass, for example.)

11:41 They're also adding built in turn-by-turn navigation to Maps in iOS 6, with traffic and ETA. Slows down? Offers reroute.

11:41 Traffic view, with incident reports overlays. So you know if it's just busy or shut down for an accident. Anonymous real time crowd sourced data.

11:40 Local Search. 100 million business listings included. New Info card for each biz, Yelp reviews, photos.

11:39 "We're doing all of the cartography ourselves." Forstall

11:39 Next: NEW MAPS APP. Built from the ground up. Wow, so colorful.

11:38 Single app mode useful for a lot of people: Teachers (esp for tests in iBooks!), museum kiosks and tours, etc.

11:38  Guided Access locks in single-app mode so you can hand your iPhone to your child and they can only use that one app.

11:37 It knows when you're near Starbucks and pulls up your card. It knows when United changes your gate and updates. (Really?) Slick.

11:35 Passbook demo. Shows Amtrak boarding pass. United Airlines. Target coupon. "Shreds" a card when you no longer want it.

11:34 Passbook saves boarding passes from airlines, store cards like Starbucks, movie tickets. Makes them easier to find, right in lock screen.

11:34 New app in iOS 6; Passbook.

11:33 Insert photos and videos in the messages window. Open password-protected docs. New animation for refresh.

11:33 Mail for iOS 6 gets a Flagged mailbox too.

11:32 Mail for iOS 6 gets a VIP feature. You can notifications for important emails, just like text message. Starred in message list. VIP inbox.

11:31 Shared Photo Stream photos show up in an album. They allow comments. And they work across iOS, Mac, Apple TV.

11:31 Next: Photo Stream. (My favorite part of iCloud.) iOS 6 will get shared photo streams. Choose photos, choose friends, share. They show up in an album. Comments.

11:30 Full screen support in Safari on iOS 6, in landscape orientation.

11:30 If your app is already installed, tapping the Smart App Banner will switch to that app, right where you left off on the site.

11:29 Upload photos from Safari to websites. "Smart app banners" shows you a link to a native app when you go to a mobile site.

11:29 Safari for iOS will get iCloud Tabs shown earlier (see anything open on any Mac/iDevice). Reading list goes offline.

11:28 FaceTime unifies phone number and Apple ID, so if someone calls your number you can answer on iPad or Mac. Messages does the same unification too.

11:27 Next: FaceTime. In iOS 6 it will work on the cellular network. No more Wi-Fi requirement. Big applause.

11:27 You can create a group whose calls ALWAYS get through. For emergencies. Or repeated calls: 2nd call in 3 minutes will come through.

11:26 New feature: Do Not Disturb. Tell your phone not to make noises while you're sleeping. No light or sound, but the messages will of course be there later.

11:26 The reminders are In 1 Hour, When I Leave, When I Get Home, and When I Get to Work. Nice.

11:26 Incoming call gives options to Reply with Message, or Remind to Call Back Later. In case you can't talk.

11:25 Enhancements for the phone app. You know, the phone?

11:24  FB events and birthdays will be in your Calendar too.

11:24 See which apps, movies, music, etc (that Apple sells) that your friends like. Shared contact info shows up in Contacts.

11:23 Public API so app developers can add integration too.

11:23 Post photos to FB from Photos, websites from Safari, talk up apps in App Store, media in iTunes Store, etc.

11:23 Facebook integration in iOS 6 too. Go to settings app and enter your Facebook credentials, and you never need to re-log in.

11:23 So in iOS 6, Siri is in iPhone 4S and the new iPad.

11:22 Local search in Siri going from U.S. only to worldwide, even in China. It's also gonna be IN THE NEW IPAD.

11:21 More Siri languages: Spanish, French for Canada, Italian, Switzerland, Korean, Mandarin for Taiwan, Cantonese for Hong Kong, and both for China.

11:20 BMW, GM, Benz, Land Rover, Jag, Audi, Toyota, Hyundai, Honda!!!

11:20  Working with car manufacturers to add a Siri button to the STEERING WHEEL. Doesn't light screen, eyes-free.

11:19  English Premier League, Spanish La Liga, Bundesliga, Serie A, Ligue 1… awesome for footy fans.

11:18 AND SIRI CAN LAUNCH APPS NOW, YAAAAAY. Spotlight, I'm sorry. But it's over.

11:17  Siri loves movies. Knows what's playing at [your local theater]. Posters, ratings, RottenTomatoes score, even watch the trailer w/o leaving Siri.

11:16 Restaurant listings improved. Sorted by rating, shows $$$ for average price, make OpenTable reservation, see Yelp reviews, etc.

11:15  It's not football season, but it knows about the NFL schedule already.

11:15 Siri knows basketball too. Knows LeBron is a little taller than Kobe. (I wish i was a little bit taller.)

11:14 It knows Buster Posey's batting average. Gives you a player card with stats. You can ask about standings too. Go, #SFGiants!!!

11:14 Siri knows sports now. You can get scores. Shows the scoreboard. Didn't ask NY Giants or SF Giants. Good Siri.

11:13 And today they announce iOS 6. Significant enhancements to Siri.

11:12 75% of iOS customers are "very satisfied." Less than 50% for Android, less for poor RIM.

11:12  130 million Game Center account. 5 billion scores submitted per week. 2/3 of top 100 games use it.

11:12  Twitter has seen a 3x increase from people on iOS since it was built in. iOS 5 has sent 10 billion tweets and 47% of the photos shared.

11:11 150 billion iMessages sent by 140 million users. 1 billion per day.

11:11 84 of the top 100 social apps use Push notification. 7 billion sent a day. 1.5 trillion so far.

11:11 Only 7% of customers are running the latest version of Android. That is what I'll never "get" about Android.

11:10  365 million iOS devices sold through March 30. More than 80% of customers are running iOS 5. Hear that, Android?

11:09 That's for upgrades from Lion or Snow Leopard. Single purchase of $19.99 will upgrade all your Macs. Free for new Macs bought from today. Developers get a "near-final developer preview" today. Next up: Scott Forstall and iOS 6.

11:08 Mountain Lion will ship in July via the Mac App Store, for $19.99. Wow!

11:07 Added lots of features for China: support for more fonts, video sharing to services I am not familiar with, setup with top email services, all to promote the Mac's growth in China.

11:06 200 other new features in Mountain Lion. Mark VIPs in Mail for smarter notifications. Gatekeeper. Offline reading list.

11:05 And the Mac game is playing on the Apple TV over AirPlay. Not bad.

11:05 He gets an invite from CSR Racing on the iPad on his Mac. Launches the game. They'll play cross platform. Great graphics.

11:03 Now we'll get a demo of AirPlay and Game Center in Mountain Lion.

11:03 Game Center for the Mac too. Same account as on iOS, track achievements, turn-based and head-to-head gaming CROSS PLATFORMS.

11:02 AirPlay Mirroring. Send pixel for pixel 1080p resolution from your Mountain Lion Mac to a (small) Apple TV. AirPlay speakers too.

11:02 Will back itself up to Time Capsule while plugged in, download app updates, etc. Totally silent. Easy on battery. Works on 2nd gen MBA, and the new MBP.

11:01 New feature: Power Nap. Keeps your Mac up to date while asleep: Email fetch, reminders, photo stream, calendars, etc.

11:00  So you basically don't need to keep a Twitter app running to tweet and see replies and DMs.

11:00 You can have Twitter use the notification center system too, and you can even "summon a Tweet sheet" from NC, even dictate a tweet.

10:59 Sharing works in full screen apps too. Shows how to share a pic from iPhoto to Messages, gets a banner notification reply back. App stays full screen.

10:57 New scrolling architecture is built on Core Animation. Zoom further out from full size for a live view of all the tabs. Pinch in to the one you want.

10:56 Tab view lets you navigate tabs with gestures.

10:56 Cloud tabs in Safari: See a list of every web page you have open on all your Apple devices. Neat!

10:55 Next: New Safari. Fastest JavaScript engine of any browser, new unified smart search field, like Chrome! Yaaaay!

10:54 Share on Twitter, Messages, etc, from anywhere, just like in Safari on the iPhone. Sharing built in across the system. Quick Look an image, share to Flickr.

10:53 Dictation also built in! Any app you can type in, you can now dictate too. Even Word.

10:53 Slide the desktop to the left to see the Notification Center like you can do on your iPhone. Connect to a projector: alerts and banners auto-disable. Nice touch.

10:52 Notification Center is also coming to the Mac. All the popups will be in Growl-like banners or alerts. Banners go away if you ignore them.

10:51 Changes to open documents made from one place show up automatically on the other.

10:51  Documents in the Cloud. Nice thumbnail view. Drag items in to the In the Cloud dialog to add it to iCloud. Easy!

10:50  Messages. (Oy. It better work more smoothly than the beta I tried and gave up on.) Attachments up to 100MB, even HD video.

10:49 You can page through the Reminders screens on the trackpad just like you would on the iPhone. Location based reminders work too. Notes app in Mountain Lion supports images, links, and you can keep notes on your desktop.

10:48  iCloud support built in. All the Apple apps have it integrated, and ML also adds Messages, Reminders, and Notes. Plus Documents in the Cloud. When you launch Pages, for example, you can see docs "In the Cloud" or "On my Mac." Pages, Numbers, Keynote, system apps like Preview, TextEdit. Devs get an iCloud SDK so they can build it in to their apps too. Demo now.

10:47 Mountain Lion "optimized for multi-touch trackpads…" [pause] "…and mice."

10:46 Lion sold 26 million copies to date, best release ever. 40% adoption in 9 months. (Windows 7 took 27 months.)

10:45  Now we're gonna talk about Mountain Lion.

10:44 "So that completes our notebook lineup." Sorry, 17-inch fans. Go snap up those refurbs now, I guess.

10:43 The new MacBook Pro starts at $2199 with 8GB of RAM and 256 storage. Available today.

10:42  You can stream up to 9 camera views simultaneously in FCPX.

10:41 Please watch the video when it's posted on Apple.com later, esp if you want to see them TWIST this thing to test the rigidity. It's delightful.

10:40 No cover glass on the display, which probably helps the glare thing Phil mentioned. This thing looks really sweet. Can't wait to visit the Apple Store and take it for a drive.

10:37 Video about the new MacBook Pro playing, starring Jony Ive of course. (They're whipping through this fast. It's almost as if they had a LOT OF THINGS TO TALK ABOUT.)

10:36 Apple has a Thunderbolt Ethernet adapter now, which is nice. Dual mics, FaceTime HD camera, backlit keyboard, "and the best stereo speakers we've ever put in a notebook computer." There's a Thunderbolt adapter for FireWire, too.

10:35 Apple says the next-gen MBP will have 7 hours of battery life, 30 days standby. MBP ports: SD card, HDMI!!!, USB 3/2, TWO THUNDERBOLT, a thinner MagSafe 2, headphone. Phil showing off Thunderbolt options. Flash RAID drive by Promise works on Thunderbolt, for example.

10:34  Quad-core i7 processor, up to 2.7GHz. Up to 16GB of memory, 1600MHz. Kepler graphics GeForce GT 650, up to 1GB of VRAM. Flash storage up to 768GB!!!

10:33 "Everything inside this next-generation MBP has been redesigned" to push the performance. Battery dominates, of course.

10:32 Apps not updated for Retina display will be pixel-doubled, but some developers have done some updates already. Examples: Well, a little app called Photoshop. AutoCAD

10:31 Apple's Pro apps updated for it, too: Aperture, Final Cut Pro X (pixel for pixel 1080p in the preview pane)

10:30 "That is the world's highest-resolution notebook display." Phil Schiller. Phil says they reduced the glare and reflection by 75%. Lion and the Apple apps have been updated to take advantage of the Retina display.

10:28  0.71 inches thick. 25% thinner than current MBP. About as thin as a MBA. 4.46 pounds. Display: "Yes, it is a Retina Display." 15.4 inches, 2880.1800, 4x previous gen's pixels. 220ppi. Dang.

10:26 Wow, so thin. New display: It's not a wedge like the current Air, but it's THIN. Looks like 15 inch. Thinner than Phil's finger. SD card slot, couple of ports. "Don't worry, we're going to tell you all about it just for a minute." Now we just drool over the design? OK.

10:25  What's next? A new MacBook Air. Hey, here we go. It's "shrouded" in black on the screen. "We asked the team to think about what would make a next-gen MacBook Pro." Schiller "You want a killer new display, architecture built for the future, radically thin and light, bold new technologies…"

10:22 Now the MacBook Pro. Ivy Bridge processor, up to 2.7GHz quad core i7, Turbo boost up to 3.7GHz, up to 8GB 1600MHz RAM, 60% faster graphics. GeForce GT 650M graphics, Kepler architecture, faster faster faster, USB 3 ports. 13-inch and 15-inch.  He said, of the MBP, "It comes in a 13-inch and 15-inch size." Uh-oh. No price changes. Same 7 hours of battery life in 15-inch MBP. Less than an inch thick (not in the Air wedge casing), ships today.  No 17-inch MacBook Pro shown in the lineup. Are you freaking? Or is that one obsolete now?

10:21  Comes in 11-inch (1366x768 display, unchanged. 4GB memory in standard config. Starts at $999, or $1,099 ($100 less) Comes in 11-inch (1366x768 display, unchanged. 4GB memory in standard config. Starts at $999, or $1,099 ($100 less). 13-inch both less expensive than before too. And they start shipping today! (He blew through those specs FAST.)

10:20 Both current USB 2 ports now support USB 3 or 2. "You don't have to think about it."

10:19  3rd gen Core aka Ivy Bridge, up to 2.0GHz dual core i7. Turbo Boost up to 3.2GHz. Up to 512GB of flash storage now available in MacBook Air! 500MBps read speed. Zip!!!!! "We're also adding USB 3!" Applause.

10:18 We are so proud of this lineup of notebooks. The MacBook Air and the MacBook Pro each stand out, and we have some nice updates to each of them."

10:17 Here comes Phil Schiller to tell us about the new notebook lineup. Screen says MacBook.

10:16 "Today we're announcing exciting new changes in our notebook lineup and major releases of OS X and iOS." Ka-ching!

10:16 Tim Cook thanks the developer community "for the incredible apps you've done for us. Thank you." Seriously.

10:15 OK, I'm a jaded journalist but that video just made me tear up. Hopefully it'll be posted later.

10:13 Next example: Speech-challenged children using iPad apps to communicate.

10:12 Next example: A treehouse in Lincoln, Vermont, available on the AirBNB app. "We don't think of it like a business. We're meeting new friends."

10:10 Another example: iPad-to-projector in a school classroom in Mumbai. I want to hug all these children.

10:08 A video is playing that highlights the "heartwarming stories" of how people use Apple hardware and software.  A blind man is shown using a special GPS iPhone App to walk through a forest.

10:07 30 billion apps downloaded, in over 150 countries (32 more than before) but Tim likes that Apple and its developers make a difference in people's lives. Aw :)

10:05  Updating us on the App Store -- over 400 million accounts. 650,000 apps.

10:04 Attendees from over 60 countries and 112 sessions with 125 labs planned for the week.

10:04 Tim Cook takes the stage after Siri's nice opening montage

10:00 "Hello and welcome to WWDC. I'm Siri, your virtual assistant and today I was asked to warm up the crowd, which should be easy since the high will be 75 degrees."
