How to Move your Data to the New iPad

You can't wait for tomorrow. That new iPad is going to be everything your heart has desired since the first iPad landed in your lap. But before you go out and purchase the whole kit and caboodle, you'll have to do a few things to make sure you can seamlessly move your data over to a new device. Forget starting over from scratch, here's how to properly migrate to the new iPad.

What You Need:

>> iPad 3
>> Your other iPad, updated to iOS 5
>> iCloud account

Back Up the Old iPad

The first step to getting your old iPad backed up is to navigate to Settings > iCloud > Storage and Backup, and scroll to the bottom of the page.

Once there, tap on the "Back Up Now" button to begin the process. Depending on how long it has been since the last backup and the speed of your internet connection, this process may take a few minutes.

When the backup to iCloud has completed, you should see an updated date and time in the "Last Backup" area.

Set Up and Restore the New iPad

After you have completed a backup of your old iPad, it's time to start up your new iPad and restore your applications and data.

After starting up your new iPad, the set up assistant will walk you through setting up your device. Select your language, country, choose your location services preferences, and then connect to your wireless network.

When you get to the "Set Up iPad" screen, select "Restore from iCloud Backup." After tapping Next, you will be prompted to enter your iCloud login. Enter your Apple ID and password, and then tap Next.

When you see the "Choose Backup" screen, select the latest Backup of your old iPad, and then click the blue Restore button to begin the restore process.

This process will take a while, so go get a nice hot cup of tea or coffee, and watch the progress bar advance on your new iPad 3. After the restore has been completed, your new device will be ready for using.

Find a Use for the Old iPad

Don't just let your old iPad sit around collecting dust. Turn it into something useful. Here's a few tips for what to do with your old iPad:

- Turn it into an external monitor, keyboard, trackpad, or remote control for your Mac

- Use your old iPad 2 as a Garageband studio

- Create a stand and use it in your kitchen or the car as a portable media device

- Or sell it on a site like Gazelle or eBay
