Magic Mouse to World: I’m (Probably) Not Dead Yet After All

Magic Mouse gestureOn Thursday, a report that Apple's Magic Mouse may be headed out to pasture caught fire like a spark in a dry forest and quickly spread across the interweb. Could Apple be heading for an all-trackpad world? As it turns out, the rumors of the Magic Mouse's demise may be greatly exaggerated.

Cult of Mac is reporting that they may have made a little boo-boo on Thursday. After reporting that the Magic Mouse was being discontinued in favor of the Magic Trackpad, only hours later the website was back with a follow-up report claiming Apple may actually be about to release a new model of the Magic Mouse instead.

"Our source in Apple inventory has followed up with us, and it appears that Apple has instead discontinued the Magic Mouse's old part number in favor for a new one," the report reveals. "This move may indicate an update to the Magic Mouse, with the most logical prediction being better integration with advanced gestures in OS X Lion."

So why the false alarm in the first place? "This report was based off an inside source confirming that Apple was phasing out the Magic Mouse's part number from its inventory," the website explains.

"We apologize for sounding the alarm too early, but it looks as though the Magic Mouse isn't going anywhere anytime soon," Cult of Mac concludes. "This is good news for the many people that still prefer a physical mouse to Apple's Magic Trackpad."

Personally, we aren't in that select group -- you'd have to pry our Magic Trackpad out of our cold, dead hands -- but it's good to know that Apple is keeping the mouse alive, at least for a little longer.
