How To Use Your Apple ID in OS X Lion

Before Lion, your Apple ID could only be used online, in the Mac App Store, or iTunes Store. But now, Apple allows you to link your Apple ID with your user account in OS X Lion. This enables you to do things like sign into screen sharing with your Apple ID and use your account with Air Drop and as authentication for File Sharing.

Configuring an Apple ID for your account is an easy thing to do. Simply head to System Preferences > Users & Groups, and then click on your account in the sidebar (note that you may need to authenticate as an administrator by clicking on the lock in the lower, left-hand corner of the window).

To link your Apple ID with your user account, click the "Set" button beside the Apple ID label in your Password account screen.

Enter your Apple ID and password, and then click OK to authenticate that information with Apple's servers and link the ID with your account.

After you have entered your initial Apple ID, click on the change button to get a screen that will allow you to add or remove Apple IDs on your account.

Now whenever you try to connect to a computer on your network and get the authentication panel for screen or file sharing, you can select the Apple ID option as a login method.
