How the iCloud Transition Will Affect iWeb Users

A few months ago, we posted a how to on moving your existing iWeb sites to a dedicated web hosting solution. Since then, more information about the MobileMe-to-iCloud transition has emerged that describes exactly how Apple will phase out the iWeb site hosting that has been a vital part of .Mac and MobileMe for the past few years.

What Happens to My iWeb Sites After the iCloud Transition?

After you transition your existing MobileMe account over to iCloud, nothing will initially happen to your iWeb sites. This is because Apple is giving every MobileMe customer the ability to keep some of their MobileMe features until June 30, 2012.

This means is that you can continue to publish your iWeb sites to me.com until that date, even after transitioning your account over to iCloud. This also goes for MobileMe Gallery and iDisk, too.

What Will Happen After June 30, 2012?

We cannot really say what will happen after that date, but if the .Mac transition was any guidance, we can expect Apple to kill the remaining MobileMe features of Gallery, iDisk, and iWeb publishing on that date.

While Apple will allow iWeb publishing up to that date, you should really begin looking at alternative hosting solutions for your iWeb sites before that day comes, if you plan to keep publishing using the iWeb application. Check out our iWeb site transition article to learn more about how to move your iWeb sites to a dedicated hosting solution.

Can I Still Use iWeb to Create My Websites?

Absolutely! Apple is only doing away with the iWeb publishing to MobileMe aspect of the iWeb application. However, the iWeb app can also publish to any website through FTP/SFTP. This means that after iWeb publishing has been turned off on MobileMe, you can still publish your iWeb sites to any paid hosting plan that supports FTP/SFTP.
