Do We Really Need An 800 hp Mustang?

2012 Shelby GT500 Super Snake

Sometimes an automobile comes out that simply makes one sit back and ask the question… why? Take the new 2012 Shelby GT500 Super Snake that's built by Shelby American Inc. for example. This new Mustang is to be unveiled at the New York International Auto Show later this month and will supposedly pack a whopping 800 hp. I mean for God's sake, that's just 201 hp shy of a Bugatti Veyron! Now don't get me wrong because I love horsepower, but in a car like the Mustang the only thing all those ponies are good for is bragging rights. First off the car has a live rear axle, which means that regardless of what you do to it the thing will still skip like a stone across a pond if you encounter bumps mid-corner. Also keep in mind that putting 800 hp to the ground evenly is no easy task. Hell, even drag slicks won't rectify that issue and if they do, you'll most likely blow apart the rear end. According to Yahoo Autos, the cost of the new 2012 Shelby GT500 Super Snake will be under $100k, which I suppose is a decent price for all that power. However in my opinion, if the thing doesn't go around a corner, then what good is it.
