Love it or hate it, the VW Golf Cabriolet is one of the world's best selling convertibles. Like the Mazda MX-5 Miata convertible, it has a reputation for being a "chick car", but that doesn't seem to impact global sales in the least. The Golf Cabriolet has been absent from the company's lineup since the previous generation was laid to rest in 2003. If you wanted a ragtop from VW, your choices were limited to the New Beetle Cabriolet or the VW Eos folding hard-top coupe. Neither one came close to matching the appeal of the Golf Cabrio, so VW will launch the Mk IV Golf Cabrio in Geneva.
Worldwide, VW's latest ragtop will be available with a choice of six engines, both in gasoline and diesel flavor, ranging from 104 horsepower up to 207 horsepower. Four gas engines and one TDI version will be available with VW's dual-clutch DSG gearbox, while the rest will come with a choice of manual or conventional automatic. The fuel efficient 1.6 TDI version is capable of getting nearly 53 mpg based on EU standards, so you can go green and still enjoy the convertible experience.
The Mk IV Golf Cabrio goes on sale in Germany immediately (for pre-orders, at least) and starts at the equivalent of $32,500 US. That price won't fly here, so VW will need to apply the same tactics to the Golf Cabrio that they did with the US Jetta if the car will be sold Stateside. Since the New Beetle Cabriolet goes away at the end of this year, that leaves the Eos as VW's only convertible in the U.S., at least for the time being. I say that we'll see the Golf Cabrio on these shores, but probably not until late 2012.
