The Aventador is Lamborghini's latest supercar creation. Chock full o' carbon fiber and V-12 horsepower, the Aventador also represents Lamborghini's first use of a carbon-fiber monocoque chassis. The good news is that this design helps shave weight off the car; in fact, the entire monocoque weighs less than 325 pounds. The bad news? If you're in an accident, your local body shop won't touch your car. Neither will your local Lamborghini dealership, but they will arrange to ship your car to the one facility in the U.S. set up to handle repairs. That site is located at the University of Washington, where Lamborghini and Boeing work with university researchers to push the boundaries of carbon fiber development.
If you think that sounds expensive, just wait. Lamborghini is in the process of training three specialists worldwide to repair the carbon fiber monocoque. These technicians will be equipped with the special tools and materials needed to inspect and make repairs to the Aventador's carbon fiber. We get a dedicated tech in the United States, while the rest of the world has to share two specialists (though if I had to guess,I'd say that one will be based in Italy and the other in the Middle East).
The Aventador starts at $378,995, and deliveries are set to begin mid-year. If you want one, you'll need to add your name to the list, since the first year's U.S. allocation is already sold out. When they start hitting the used market, I'd be real careful to avoid any with salvage titles and $99.95 paint jobs. Like the saying goes, there's no such thing as a free lunch.
